WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Summer camp is the highlight of the summer for many kids.

Children who are blind or visually impaired are attending a unique camp in Luzerne County.

Two local organizations are teaming up to teach this group of kids the valuable skills they need to grow into independent members of our community.

28/22 news reporter Amelia Sack takes us to “Camp Sight”.

Connecting kids who are blind and visually impaired through activities.

Thursday’s camp adventure took the youngsters to Evergreen, a Wilkes-Barre plant store.

Giving the kids a chance to get their hands dirty and experience something new. This is the goal of camp sight.

“What we really wanna do is just kind of show them that they can do anything that their sighted peers can do,” said Amy Feldman, VP of Development at Northeast Sight Services.

Hosted by Northeast Sight Services and their partner Community Services for Sight as a part of their insight kids club of NEPA, the two-week program gives children the opportunity to learn social and daily living skills.

“Being a camper here, for me, is having the ability to embrace the new. Having the ability to try something that you never thought you would,” expressed Lily Morgan, a camp attendee.

Camper Lily Morgan says the experience has given her more confidence.

“It truly changes me as a person,” said Morgan.

Camp Sight provides kids with much more than just a new skillset.

“I know, like a lot of people, we like to have fun have like lunch and stuff so and we are friends so friendships stay together,” said Jake Sypeck, a camp attendee.

Camp wraps up tomorrow, but the organizations’ insight kids club offers children activities all year long.
