WILKESBORO — Wilkes Community College's Workforce Development and Community Education (WDCE) division is pleased to announce the successful completion of its Introduction to Welding Class in collaboration with Gardner Glass of North Wilkesboro. This initiative, held in partnership with Wilkes Correctional Facility and the College and Career Readiness (CCR) division, aimed to equip offenders with valuable employability skills and hands-on welding expertise.

The program, conducted from Jan. 23 to June 27, commenced with a comprehensive 24-hour employability skills workshop. Participants received training in resume building, interview techniques, and workplace etiquette to prepare them for reintegration into the workforce upon release. Following this, students engaged in ninety-six hours of intensive welding instruction, mastering techniques across various metal types.

While enrolled in the program, students were also provided the opportunity to gain a high school credential through the CCR classes offered at the correctional facility. Students prepare for a battery of assessments designed to test their reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science knowledge. This unique partnership provides students the opportunity to pursue two educational goals simultaneously.

"We are thrilled with the dedication and progress shown by the five students who completed the program," said Heather Brooks, Coordinator of Occupational Extension at Wilkes Community College. "These students have acquired valuable welding skills and also earned WCC certificates, recognizing their achievement." Brooks emphasized, "The goal of this program is to equip them with valuable skills they can utilize upon their release."

“We are happy to partner with various entities for the benefit of students,” said DeeAnna Parker, Director of College and Career Readiness at Wilkes Community College. “As a recipient of Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funds, we are vigilant of ways to streamline educational processes for students.” Parker stated, “We are committed to student success.”

Instructor Will Johnson led the welding sessions, ensuring students received hands-on training that prepared them for real-world welding challenges. The success of this session underscores Wilkes Community College's commitment to providing educational opportunities that contribute to workforce readiness and rehabilitation.

The next class will begin on Aug. 6, and run through Dec. 12. This upcoming session aims to build on the achievements of the previous cohort, offering new participants the chance to develop marketable skills in welding. For more information, contact Heather Brooks at (336) 838-6103.

Wilkes Community College's Workforce Development and Community Education (WDCE) division offers a wide range of educational programs designed to meet the needs of the local community. Through partnerships with industry leaders and community organizations, WDCE provides accessible training opportunities that enhance employability and foster personal growth.
