    Something in music: the origin

One night at a trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had scribbled down more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal’s about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those same terms could be applied to music: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. And the rest is history…

    ‘Something’ in Music 432

    Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “It's All Over Now, Baby Blue” written and first recorded by American singer, songwriter, and musician Bob Dylan. It was first featured on his platter “Bringing It All Back Home” which hit the record racks back in 1965.

    Something New

Our “something new” this time is the debut solo single titled “Too Drunk” recorded by American singer, songwriter, and musician Lance Woolie. According to his official website, the song is the result of creative collaboration with “legendary guitarist Brent Mason and a group of exceptional musicians.” The music video, written and directed by Woolie, follows “the adventures of Lance, a charmingly disheveled character with long hair and a long beard, as he navigates a series of humorous mishaps in the small town of New Roads, Louisiana.”

    Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the 1965 song “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” which was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. This piano-based cover cut is by American singer-songwriter and musician Heather Pierson. It’s off the New Hampshire-based artist’s 2014 disc “Motherless Child.” The cut includes Pierson on piano and vocals, Shawn Nadeau on bass, and Craig Bryan on drums. Keep your peepers peeled for her upcoming new album, “Back To The Light”, dropping on September 27th, 2024.

    Something Blue

Last but certainly not least, our “something blue” this time is the song “Runnin Blue” recorded by the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Area big band blues band Delta Wires. It was originally included on the group’s 2006 disc “Them That’s Got.” If you’d like to enjoy them live and are in the Livermore area, you’re in luck.
