    Something in music: the origin

One night at a trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had scribbled down more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal’s about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those same terms could be applied to music: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. And the rest is history…

    ‘Something’ in Music 434

    Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Angry Eyes” written and recorded by the American pop rock duo (Kenny) Loggins & (Jim) Messina. It was the closing cut on the performing pair’s second platter and hit the record racks back in 1972. It peaked at number 16 on the charts.

    Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new track titled “Little Sparrow” written and recorded by the Denver, Colorado-based folk singer-songwriter, and musician Carolyn Shulman. It’s the first single off her new, upcoming second release, “Heart On A Wire.” It features Shulman on acoustic guitar and vocals, Christian Teele on drums, Bradley Morse on upright bass, Eric Moon on accordion, Enion Pelta-Tiller on fiddle, John McVey on banjo and backing vocals, and Jen Hitt also on backing vocals.

    Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the 1970 song by Sherman Kelly. This creative cover is by the American progressive bluegrass band the Yonder Mountain String Band. It was first featured on the act’s 2017 album “Love. Ain’t Love.”

If you’re in Florida and want to see what the group is up to now, you’re in luck. The band will be performing live at the Suwannee Roots Revival on Thursday, October 10th through Sunday, October 13th, 2024 in the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. Other acts performing this year include the Old Crow Medicine Show, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Donna the Buffalo (four days), Peter Rowan Walls of Time Band with Don Grant Reggaebilly, Jim Lauderdale & The Game Changers, Della Mae, Paul McDonald & The Mourning Doves, Henhouse Prowlers, The Grass Is Dead, Jon Stickley Trio, The Ain’t Sisters, Verlon Thompson, Mosier Brothers Band, Blair Crimmins & The Hookers, Walter Parks & The Unlawful Assembly, Sauce Boss, Grandpa’s Cough Medicine, The Lee Boys, Ralph Roddenbery, Kaleta & Super Yamba Band, Snake Oil Medicine Show, Grateful Dawg, Big Cosmo’s Band, Sloppy Joe, The Fried Turkeys, Quartermoon, and Magic Moon Traveling Circus.

According to a recent email, the family-friendly Suwannee Roots Revival “focuses on showcasing established and emerging roots musicians throughout the weekend” and “you never know who will give a surprise sit-in on stage” or even in the campground. The event will feature “four days of music and dance on multiple stages, along with yoga, music workshops, a Kids Tent, and more. There will also be numerous hands-on workshops on the Music Farmers Stage, a raffle, and a Vending Village featuring arts and crafts, food, and beverages.

Tickets are now on sale. One popular option is the “multi-day Weekend Ticket that includes festival admission for four days of music, as well as primitive camping on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.” Children under 12 accompanied by a parent or guardian are admitted free.

Note that a separate “event car pass” is needed to bring a vehicle into the campground. The advance car passes are $15.00. They may be purchased at the gate for $20.00. Complete ticket information and tickets are available on the official website.

    Something Blue

Last but certainly not least, our “something blue” this time is the song “Ash Wednesday Blues” written and recorded by American singer-songwriter and guitarist Anders Osborne. It’s off his 2001 release “Ash Wednesday Blues.” If you’d like to see what Anders Osborne is doing right now, you might be in luck!
