    Something in music: the origin

One night at a trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had scribbled down more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal’s about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those same terms could be applied to music: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. And the rest is history…

    ‘Something’ in Music 436

    Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” written and recorded by the American rock group the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was on the Los Angeles-based band’s 10th studio album titled “I'm with You” which dropped on July 15, 2011.

    Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new track titled “Texas Flyer (Live).” This blues rocker was written and recorded live by American singer-songwriter and blues guitarist Jon Geiger. The track is off his new album titled simply “Live At Harvelle’s.” (Keep your eyes open for your rockin’ writer’s review of the full album.)

    Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the 1984 song "Holding Out for a Hero" co-written by Jim Steinman and Dean Pitchford. This emotive adaptation is by singer, songwriter and pop cover queen Karine Hannah. Retitled “Holding Out For A Hero (say a prayer)”, she released it as a single in 2022.

    Something Blue

Last but certainly not least, our “something blue” this time is the song “Lonesome Blues” recorded by the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Area big band blues band Delta Wires. It was originally included on the group’s 2002 release “Tears Like Rain.” If you’d like to enjoy them live and are in Nevada, you’re in luck.

Delta Wires will be performing at the Nashville Social Club Carson City in Carson City, Nevada on Friday, August 23rd, 2024 from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. Tickets are $25.00. Get yours at this website.

Stuck in California? Fret not! Delta Wires will also be performing a free concert on Friday, September 6th, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at San Anselmo Live On The Avenue in San Anselmo, California. (You can check out your rockin’ writer’s review of their most recent release right here!)

Did we mention your favorite “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”? If not, let us know. Don’t forget to send us your bride photos too!
