    Something in music: the origin

One night at a trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had scribbled down more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal’s about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those same terms could be applied to music: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. And the rest is history…

    ‘Something’ in Music 438

    Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Mary Jane's Last Dance” written by the late American singer-songwriter Tom Petty and recorded with his band the Heartbreakers. It was first released on his “Greatest Hits” album which dropped in 1993. The track peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100.

    Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new track titled “Masterpiece” co-written by American singer-songwriter Neale Eckstein and musician Tom Prasada-Rao. According to a message on social media, this is a “song about parents and children and appreciating them while they are young.” It’s off his premiere solo disc titled “Never Too Late” which drops on October 11th, 2024. (Keep your eyes open for your rockin’ writers’ review of the entire album!)

    Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the 1989 song "Rockin’ in the Free World" by Neil Young. This recent rockin’ cover cut is by Kansas City’s own Kurt Allen Band. If you’d like to see singer-songwriter and guitarist Allen and his band perform live, you’re in luck!

According to a recent e-communique, the group is still on their Marathon 2024 Rockin’ The Blues U.S. Tour. In fact, Allen is especially excited about the next “local show” on Friday, August 30th at 7:00 p.m. at the Hideout Bar & Grill, in Gladstone, Missouri. Tickets are $5.00 each. For tickets and additional information, visit this website.

    Something Blue

Last but certainly not least, our “something blue” this time is the song "Buddha and the Blues." Written and recorded by American singer-songwriter and guitarist Anders Osborne, the track is featured on his 2019 album of the same name. If you’d like to see what Anders Osborne is doing right now, you might be in luck!

He is now on tour with Louisiana Bayou Blues guitarist Tab Benoit’s “I Hear Thunder” Tour 2024. Osborne, who appears on Benoit’s upcoming album, "I Hear Thunder" (Whiskey Bayou Records), will be performing live with Benoit and special guest musician JD Simo on Friday, August 30th, at Saint Rocke, in Hermosa Beach, California, at 8:00 p.m. According to a recent email, this 21+ show will also musically mark the official release of Benoit’s new disc. Tickets are $82.15 per person. For tickets and additional information visit this website.
