Philadelphia Shaken by 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake

Philadelphia, PA Residents of Philadelphia and the surrounding region were startled this morning at approximately 10:23 AM when a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Tewksbury, New Jersey. The tremors were felt across a wide area, including Philadelphia, parts of New Jersey, and as far away as New York City.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the epicenter of the earthquake was located about 60 miles southwest of Philadelphia. The earthquake was relatively shallow, occurring at approximately 5 kilometers (about 3 miles).

While no significant damage has been reported, the shaking caused alarm and evacuation of some buildings in the affected areas, including Philadelphia's City Hall. Residents took to social media to report their experiences, describing swaying buildings, rattling furniture, and a distinct rumbling sensation.

According to the USGS, earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in the region, but they are usually not this strongly felt. The last notable quake in the area occurred in 2011, with a magnitude of 5.8 centered in Virginia.

Local authorities are urging residents to stay calm and check for any signs of damage to their homes or businesses. Experts remind everyone that aftershocks can occur following an earthquake, so it's essential to remain alert.
