    2024-03-13

BRYAN — An Edon woman charged with trying to inflict harm upon a Williams County sheriff’s deputy during an arrest attempt in which shots were fired has entered a not guilty by reason insanity plea.

Nicole Schmig, 23, withdrew her not guilty plea in Williams County Common Pleas Court and entered a plea of not guilty by reason on insanity on a charge of felonious assault, a first-degree felony; two counts of failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, third- and fourth-degree felonies; and charges of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony; vandalism, a fifth-degree felony; and OVI, a first-degree misdemeanor.

The charges allege that on Dec. 6 Schmig failed to stop her vehicle (a 2010 Ford F-150 pickup) when ordered to do so by law enforcement, and attempted to cause physical harm to a Williams County sheriff’s deputy with the vehicle.

Shots were fired by law enforcement during the incident in Pioneer, although no one was injured.

A vehicle pursuit ended when Schmig crashed her vehicle. Her blood-alcohol level measured .322 the day of the incident, well above the legal limit (.08), and she also allegedly possessed loaded 9mm and .38-caliber handguns in her vehicle, according to the indictment.
