Iowa National Guard unit will return 150 soldiers back from Middle East deployment

New affordable housing options available in Atkins as part of Derecho recovery
ATKINS, Iowa — The city of Atkins unveiling some new affordable housing duplexes in town. The units were made possible as part of the federal government's response to the 2020 Derecho recovery. The city partnering with Ralston Eco Homes and Todd Richardson Construction to build three duplexes on Driftwood Lane. The homes will have heat pumps and solar panels that will cover up to half of the cost of electricity.

Fire crews work quickly to prevent flames from burning through home
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A fire in Cedar Rapids was quickly contained, preventing it from spreading further into a home. Crews were called to the 600 blcok of Weaver Street Southwest just before 5:30pm Sunday. When they arrived, they found the flames coming from a back porch, damaging some siding. Fire crews were able to bring the flames under control before significant damage was done to the interior of the home. No one was there when the fire started.
