WILLIAMSPORT, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Keep your pets’ paws out of the Potomac River because algae mats were found in the Williamsport to Riley Lock area.

The Maryland Departments of Agriculture, Environment, Health and Natural Resources (DNR) said pet owners should refrain from letting their animals in the water until further notice.

Washington County libraries are more than just a refuge from the summer heat

Algae mats could be harmful to animals if ingested, officials said. It looks like “mats of fine, green cotton,” which can be seen along the river’s shorelines. It attaches itself to rocks or plants on the river’s bottom or it floats downstream.

DNR officials said they will monitor the situation and let residents know when the conditions improve. Until then, pet owners should keep their animals out of that area of the river.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more information about harmful algal blooms and how to prevent your pets from getting sick.
