Grimesland man charged with statutory rape; victim's mother charged as accessory
A Grimesland man has been charged with sex crimes alleged by a child in his care and the victim's mother was also charged for failing to report the abuse at the pair's home. The Pitt County Sheriff's Office said in May their agency received multiple notices from Child Protective Services regarding alleged abuse. PCC Reminding Parents about Explore Summer Camps for Kids
WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College is reminding local parents that there are still opportunities for their children to participate in the college’s Explore Summer Camps. PCC Explore Camp Coordinator Lisa Webb says that in the coming weeks, the college will offer camps on 3D gaming, babysitting, paddleboarding and computer programming. Costs, start dates and capacities vary for each camp, and registration is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Bank employee arrested for Assault by Strangulation
On June 20, 2024, KPD officers responded to an assault report at Wells Fargo located at 1903 W Vernon Avenue. Upon arrival, they made contact with the victim, who stated that while she was waiting in line, a bank employee named Lucretia McMurtry (55, of Kinston) began yelling at her. The verbal altercation escalated when McMurtry grabbed the victim by the neck, shook her head uncontrollably, and began strangling her.

New Amazon facility opens in Fayetteville
The giant new Amazon Fulfillment Center near Fort Liberty is starting to show signs of life. The new Amazon facility opened in June in Fayetteville at 6309 Bragg Blvd. The 1.3 million-square-foot-facility located in the Military Business Park was supposed to open in 2023, but a representative from Amazon told WRAL News the delay won't stop the company in its plans to hire 1,000 employees at the site.
