Rickner sentenced for matricide and related felonies
Convicted murderer Matthew Earl Rickner, 30, was sentenced a total of 60 years, six months for matricide, the shooting of Phyllis Rickner, his mother, last December 29. Rickner was given the maximum sentence of 40 years to Life for Count 1, violation of Penal Code 187 by Superior Court Judge Darren McElfresh. Suspect of Bridgeville homicide identified by Humboldt County Sheriff's Office
HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. — On Sunday the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) arrested this man, twenty-year-old Melvin Portillo from Sacramento, California for homicide. HCSO said deputies were dispatched to the 27000 block of Highway 36 near Bridgeville on Sunday, for reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they said they discovered one man dead and arrested Portillo for homicide.

During a community forum last week, a longtime coastal planning consultant shared insight on sea level rise policies in the state and their local impact. During the Speak Up Newport’s monthly meeting on Wednesday (July 10), the featured speaker was Don Schmitz, president and principal planner of the land use consulting firm Schmitz & Associates. Schmitz represents a wide variety of clients, including the city of Newport Beach, for items that go before the California Coastal Commission. He also works as the consultant for Smart Coast California. He’s been involved with coastal planning and issues related to sea level rise for many years.
