Port City Life Newsletter: Even if rain impacts this weekend's events, we still got you

    By John Staton, Wilmington StarNews,

Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter John Staton.

We could get an early taste of hurricane season this weekend, and as anyone who's lived around here for a while knows, these storms can play havoc with events and live entertainment. Over the years, I've done my fair share of stories, and even put together entire sections, that were rendered moot when a tropical storm or hurricane decided to pay us a visit.

Hopefully we get off easy this weekend, but it's always helpful to have a dry (or a wet) run to make sure your storm supplies and hurricane kits are in good shape just in case you need them.

    Onward!

    Weekend weather outlook

Very good chance of rain, maybe a lot of it, on Friday and Saturday as a low-pressure system works its way through the area. Might see a little sun on Sunday but there's also a good chance of thunderstorms. Highs in the mid-80s Friday and Saturday, Sunday near 90.

Summer always brings the concerts, and the Wilmington area has a ton of them this weekend .

The outdoor shows are looking a little dicey because of the rain, but there are indoor shows as well at such venues as Reggie's 42nd Street Tavern (hard rockers Leather Lung on Friday), Live at Ted's (Virginia blues rocker Acisse Jay on Saturday), and Bowstring Burgers and Brewyard (blues rapper G Love & Special Sauce on Sunday).

The Second Street Mural, also known as the "I Believe in Wilmington" mural, is receiving some tender-loving care that will both restore the artwork to its former glory and potentially enhance the ability of the mural's creators to raise money for local nonprofits in its name. I've got the story behind one of downtown's most iconic artworks .
