    Warrants outline Wilmington man's arrest on attempted first-degree murder charge

    Arrest warrants reveal more details in a Wilmington man's attempted first-degree murder case.

    On June 20, 44-year-old Luat Van Tran of 1703 Covey Lane, Wilmington, was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder, injury to personal property, and resist/delay/obstruct public officers.

    911 call audio related to the incident detailed the alleged stabbing of an approximately 40-year-old family member at a Covey Lane residence.

    Van Tran also faces additional charges of driving while impaired, felony fleeing to elude arrest with aggravating factors, reckless driving wanton disregard, driving while license revoked impaired revocation, and two counts of felony probation violation, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office inmate search.

    Arrest warrants issued for by the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office on June 20 identify the victim in the stabbing as Tan Quoc Tran and provide more details on Van Tran's charges.

    On June 20, Van Tran "did with malice aforethought attempt to kill and murder Tan Quoc Tran by means of stabbing Tan Quoc Tran in the upper chest area with a knife and attempted to continue to stab Tan Quoc Tran multiple times," according to the arrest warrant.

    A deputy with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop, which Van Tran did not head to, according to the arrest warrant. The deputy had to "complete a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle and in the process of effecting arrest (the deputy) sustained an injury to his right ankle" while attempting to bring Van Tran into custody.

    Pertaining to the injury to personal property charge, the arrest warrant states that Van Tran "unlawfully and willingly did wantonly injure personal property, (an) Apple iPad, the property of Tan Quoc Tran" causing damage "in excess of $200."

    A second warrant issued for Van Tran states that the suspect "did operate a motor vehicle on a highway, (the) intersection of North College Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, while fleeing (and) attempting to elude a law enforcement officer." At the time of the violation, "there was gross impairment of the defendant's faculties while driving due to consumption of an impairing substance."

    Charging text also indicates that Van Tran's license was revoked for an impaired driving revocation at the time of the violation.

    Van Tran operated "a motor vehicle on a street or highway carelessly and heedlessly in willful and wanton disregard of the rights and safety of others," according to the arrest warrant.

    A third warrant issued for Van Tran states that the suspect "did drive a vehicle on (South) College Road, a highway, while subject to an impairing substance."

    As of Thursday evening, Van Tran was being held in the New Hanover County Jail under a $520,000 secured bond.
