Welcome to the weekly Port City Foodies newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter Allison Ballard. What's best in terms of food and drink is usually subjective. Yelp and similar companies that compile restaurant lists will use reviews as the database. And there are several polls that ask for direct participation. No method is perfect, but as The StarNews embarks on our own single-topic reader polls, the result is usually interesting. I was a little surprised by the winner of our attempt to find the best local burger . But the winner of the most recent french fry poll wasn't as shocking. It’s usually the default answer when someone asks about great fries , at least in my experience. Know what it is? Read more below.

    Hand cut, special seasoning

I believe it’s fair to say that the fries have a cult following at the local P.T.’s restaurants . They took home an impressive portion of the vote out of a field of 26 also-delicious possibilities . It also made them part of USA Today’s America’s Favorite Fries project.

That doesn’t even consider alternative and over-the-top loaded fries. For example, I recently learned about the seafood topped fries at Breezeway Restaurant in Pender County, one of the oldest in the county . What are your favorite dishes? What would you like to see as the next topic for a best-of food poll?

    New brews coming

New Anthem Beer Project always had a cool space to enjoy local beers in the renovated automobile showroom on Dock Street downtown. But it’s been empty since that brewery closed earlier this year . Well, no more. A new business is planning to open soon, after they finish all the necessary permits and plans. While Oden Brewing Company is based in Greensboro, the owners are Wilmington residents who’ve been looking for the right local spot for a while. I’m personally looking forward to trying their Escape Into Sunshine Summer Ale, with fresh ginger and lemon peel. Yum!

    The right wine

In other adult beverage news, I know a few wine lovers who consult the Wine Spectator restaurant awards when planning vacations and nights out. Only a handful of local restaurants are on the list. They include The Fortunate Glass in downtown Wilmington and Beach Shop & Grill in Topsail Beach. There are also two new additions to this year’s list, including a local restaurant with more than 4,000 bottles. Read more here .
