From the archives: Do you remember these Wilmington ice cream shops?

We're in the dog days of summer, and one way to cool off is with a scoop (or three) of ice cream.

An article in the July 14, 1983, Wilmington Morning Star celebrated Wilmington ice cream places where you could "get the whole scoop."

Shields Ice Cream was a Port City favorite. Located on Floral Parkway, it had both traditional and unusual flavors such as butter pecan, pralines and cream and Charlie Brown, which was chocolate ice cream and peanut butter.

Then there was Pig's Dinner, a double banana split with six scoops of ice cream.

In 1983, Swensen's Ice Cream Factory had Sticky Chewy Chocolate. The Scoop in The Cotton Exchange had a Tin Roof Sundae -- "a concoction of vanilla ice cream, gooey chocolate and chocolate-covered peanuts."

Mint's Ice Cream was on Market Street and Independence Mall with flavors such as orange pineapple and nutty coconut fudge.

While most of these places have closed, a few remain. One of them is chain store Baskin-Robbins, which is at 3809 Oleander Drive. Forty-one years ago, it had Honey Bunny, which is vanilla with honey mixed in. Another franchise on Oleander Drive is Dairy Queen.

Long gone is the location on Dawson Street with the Eskimo girl sign -- and more recently its replacement location across the street.

Today there are no shortage of local shops: Boombalatti's, Celtic Creamery, The Crazy Mason, Brewster's and Mimi & Papa's to name a few.

And in downtown Wilmington, you're sure to see long lines at Kilwins.
