This candy shop brings rolled ice cream and trendy treats to the Wilmington area

It’s as much of a show as it is a dessert. Milk, cream and other ingredients are poured onto a supercooled surface and, while you watch, they're chopped and spread and transformed into a curled frozen dessert. Because of how it comes together, Thai stir-fried ice cream or rolled ice cream, has been popular on social media and videos.

After watching a few of them, Julie Taylor decided to bring the dessert to the Wilmington area.

She and her husband Aaron Taylor opened the Beach Blooms florist shop in Carolina Beach in 2010. Since then, the business has evolved. First, they added a gift shop and that gradually turned into the dude... Sweet! Candy Shop, which they opened as their storefront at 100 N. Lake Park Blvd. in 2019.

And, as is posted on their front door, they kind of specialize in Tik Tok candy trends. New this year is ice cream.

“People kept asking for ice cream,” she said. “Because of the florist shop, we open earlier than a lot of other businesses.” As of May, they’ve been selling soft serve, two flavors at a time, especially for beach breakfasts. They added rolled ice cream this year, too.

“I don’t think anyone in the area is doing this,” Julie Taylor said.

You can find the ice cream, and some of their other cool goodies between Island Book Shop and Pop’s Diner and the candy shop is open year-round, too. In addition to a variety of candies, like lollipops, Hammond’s chocolate bars and Jelly Belly jellybeans, here’s a look at some of the trending treats you can find there.

Rolled Ice Cream

The Rock ‘n’ Rolled menu at dude... Sweet! includes 10 flavor combinations all named for ’80s music. The Bananarama combines banana and peanut butter cups, with their house cream. The Sweet Child O’ Mine adds your choice of cereal and S'more than Words has fudge, marshmallow fluff and graham cracker.

“Because of the way they're made, there's a little bit of everything in every bite," Julia Taylor said.

And while rolled ice cream may look like it would have an icy texture, the final product is really creamy.

"It really does turn into ice cream," she said.

Freeze Dried Treats

Another cool piece of equipment at dude.... Sweet! is a freeze drier where they make a variety of products in house, like freeze-dried ice cream sandwiches, Charleston Chews and saltwater taffy. They've even freeze dried another Pleasure Island favorite, Britts Donuts.

Fruit Roll Up Burritos

With the new soft serve, the Taylors have an “off menu” special that has also been a viral video sensation. When ice cream is wrapped in these sweet burritos, the chilled fruit roll up gets crunchy and kind of chatters when you bite into it, Aaron Taylor said.

"It's kind of fun," he said.
