Folks lined up and were ready to shop before the doors officially opened Friday morning at the new Burlington location in Wilson.
The national discount retailer celebrated its grand opening in a special way, too. Burlington donated $5,000 to Jones Elementary School through its long-standing partnership with the national nonprofit organization AdoptAClassroom.org . Jones teachers and staff were present for the big reveal.
“We’re here to offer great value, great prices because we know you need to spread that dollar out a little further,” Jamie Sowers, store manager, told the crowd. “We’re grateful to give back. As educators and teachers, you’re the true heroes here. We’re glad to be a part of the community …”
Burlington, formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, is located in the corner building beside Five Below in Heritage Crossing shopping center in the former Bed, Bath and Beyond location.
“I’m super excited to have Wilson now on the radar for Burlington,” said Sandra McKinney, district manager said. She added that Burlington had one of the best job fairs that she’s ever seen since she’s been with the company.
“We’ve been able to employ tons of associates working here in this store,” she said. “We’re going to ensure that you guys have the best brands, the best value, and we replenish this merchandise two to three times a week.”
McKinney said Burlington also likes to give back.
Jones Elementary Principal Sharon Huneycutt said the $5,000 donation from Burlington was incredible.
“We’re extremely grateful to have been chosen,” Huneycutt said. “Each teacher will be given a portion of these funds to purchase for their classroom. There will be a selection of educational stores to shop from. It will be given back to our teachers and our students. We’re very excited.”
After the doors opened, it didn’t take long for another line to form as patrons scored some good finds and needed to check out. Wilson residents Luvette Carpenter and Sequoia Barnes said when they heard about the store’s grand opening Friday, they had to be among the first to shop.
“I’m excited, period, for us to have a new store,” Carpenter said.
“I’m going to be coming back,” Barnes added.
Again on Saturday, the first 100 customers ages 18 and older will receive a $10 bonus card to be used toward their purchase. On Sunday, customers will receive a free Burlington umbrella, while supplies last.
