The Wilson City Little League Ages 7-8 team still had some leftover Fourth of July fireworks in its bats Friday in the first round of the North Carolina Little League Ages 7-8 tournament at Gillette Baseball Complex.

Wilson, the District 6 champion, bombarded Newport 12-1 in a Pool C game halted after four-and-a-half innings due to the mercy rule. Wilson rapped 12 hits in just three turns at bat as it powered to the first day’s most one-sided result. In the other Pool C game, Winston-Salem National slipped past Lake Norman Blue 10-8.

Wilson will face Lake Norman Blue at 11 a.m. Saturday at Southern Bank Stadium then wrap up pool play at 1 p.m. against Winston-Salem National.

Newport got its run in the top of the first inning Friday on Gillette’s Field No. 3 before Wilson took the lead for keeps with three runs in the bottom of the inning. WCLL added four more runs in the second and topped it off with five in the third as it equaled the number of runs each inning with the number of hits.

Three players — Maxton Warren, Preston Staton and Nash Salter — each rapped two hits for WCLL while Bennett Parker was 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Driving in a run each for Wilson were Staton, Warren, Salter, Max Harris, Finn Mariani, Cameron Parker, Manning Hare, Colt Pierce and Bennett Parker. Mariani doubled and Warren stole two bases and scored twice.

    Rounds of games Saturday will start at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The Ages 8-9 state tournament also starts Saturday at Gillette.
