Police say a man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after he shot another man with a rifle early Sunday morning in Wilson.

David Taylor, 39, of the 600 block of Cemetery Street, is also charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, according to a release from Sgt. Eric McInerny, public information officer with the Wilson Police Department.

McInerny said that 12:11 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to the 600 block of Cemetery Street after a report of a gunshot.

“Officers arrived on scene and observed the suspect, Taylor, armed with a rifle,” McInerny said. “Taylor was standing over the victim, Tony Maurice Perry, 49, of Wilson who was laying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.”

McInerny said officers gave Taylor commands to drop the firearm, and he obeyed.

Taylor was placed under arrest without incident, McInerny said.

Wilson County Emergency Medical Services took Perry to East Carolina University Health Medical Center in critical condition, McInerny said.

Taylor was placed in the Wilson County Jail under no bond.  On Monday, Taylor made a first appearance in Wilson County District Court on the felony charges. District Judge Ed Brown gave Taylor a $150,000 secured bond. Taylor made the bond and was released from incarceration.

McInerny said the case is still under investigation.

Police ask anyone with information about the case to call the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
