WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) — An umpire and an assistant coach are both suspended after an altercation during a Little League game in Wilson, the city said Tuesday.

In the video reviewed by CBS 17, the coach walked up to the umpire shoved him, the umpire fights back, and the fight moves from behind home plate until it’s out of the cameras view.

Monday evening, city officials said Wilson City Little League was hosting the 10-12 North Carolina State Tournament at Gillette Baseball Complex when the incident happened during the 8 p.m. Cherryville vs. Bull City game.

Aaron Schoonmaker, the President of Bull City Little League, tells CBS 17 he’s proud none of his coaches or players were involved in the altercation.

“I don’t think behavior like that really belongs in Little League baseball and I think that our players kind of understand that, and our managers definitely do too,” Schoonmaker said. “Respecting the game and respecting the umpires is a big part of that.”

Wilson police said they responded to the field after the altercation took place.

Officers said no charges were filed, however, Wilson Parks and Recreation said they were working out the issue.

According to a news release from the City of Wilson, city officials have thoroughly reviewed the situation and will follow their protocols in administering the upcoming suspensions.

“We have no tolerance for this type of behavior,” said David Lee, Wilson Parks and Recreation Director. “There are a lot of people working hard to make sure our youth are having a positive experience and it’s just unfortunate and honestly embarrassing that two adults ruined that last night.”

The City of Wilson said umpires are scheduled through a booking agent and are independent contractors.

According to the initial tournament schedule from Wilson City Little League, the rest of the games are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

CBS 17 reached out to Cherryville Little League and has not heard back as of Tuesday evening.
