    Community Briefs: Back-to-school celebration planned

    Total Impact Outreach Ministries, 502 Jordan St. SW, will hold a back-to-school community event from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3.

    Sponsored by the Total  Impact youth, the event will include gospel groups, free supplies and free food. There will be trolley rides, pony rides and exhibitors from first responder and county government agencies.

    Hunt High retirees’ group to meet

    Hunt High School retirees will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Something Different Café and Catering, 3342 Airport Blvd NW.

    The group will visit and continue conversations over lunch. Participants are asked to confirm attendance no later than Aug. 1 through the “Hunt Retirees and Lunch Loonies” Facebook page or by emailing lisa_27851@yahoo.com .

    Wilson Republican Women meeting scheduled

    The Wilson Republican Women will meet at noon Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Wilson Elks Lodge, 2814 Fieldstream Drive N. Guest speakers will be state Rep. Ken Fontenot and former Wilson GOP Chair Christy Fyle.

    ‘Stop the Violence’ festival planned Aug. 10

    The annual Stop the Violence Summer Festival will be held from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, at Warren Street Park, 501 Bruton St.

    The event will feature speakers, musical entertainment, food and games. Vendors and donations are welcome. For more information, call minister Mosie Lee Speight at 252-668-9936 or the Golden Girls at 252-236-1362.

    Douglass alumni plan 50th anniversary dance

    The Frederick Douglass Alumni Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 10 with a dance from 8 p.m. till midnight at the Darden Alumni Center, 1600 Lipscomb Road E.

    Music will be provided by DJ Trouble, and light refreshments will be served. Admission is $25, payable in cash at the door. Proceeds will be used for community outreach.

    Donations sought for back-to-school sneaker drive

    Toya Love Services is holding a back-to-school sneaker drive in partnership with The Brisket Bar. Folks can donate gently worn sneakers or gift cards to kids in need until Saturday, Aug. 10, at two locations: The Kyle Auto Group, 3100 Downing St. SW, or The Brisket Bar, 2800 Raleigh Road Parkway. All shoe sizes are needed.

    Sneaker distribution is planned from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at The Brisket Bar. Families in need are encouraged to sign their child up prior to the event.

    End of summer party set for Sept. 1

    The Faithful Brothers Club of Wilson and the Charles H. Darden Alumni Association will present the “End of Summer All-White Affair” from 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1 to 1 a.m. at the Darden Alumni Center, 1600 Lipscomb Road E.

    DJ CeCe will provide music. The event is BYOB. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
