The first day of school is right around the corner and the Family Empowerment Center has community members' backs.

The West Linn-Wilsonville School District held its annual Family Empowerment Center Back to School Event at Boeckman Creek Elementary School on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

For the fourth year, school district staff handed out backpacks, school supplies, food and more to a line of children and families that wound its way around the front of Boeckman Creek. Underneath the late summer sun, students quickly moved on from their new red fireman hats to the free Kona shaved ice trucked parked on the field.

Inside the school's commons were booths from local organizations like the Wilsonville and West Linn public libraries, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Clackamas Community College.

The first day of school for all West Linn-Wilsonville students is Tuesday, Aug. 27. There is no school on either Monday, Aug. 26 or Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2.

Smart Start is Thursday, Aug. 22. Smart Start is an opportunity for families of students with 504s and IEPs — specialized education plans — to make introductions and get situated before the beginning of the school year to ensure the best educational outcomes for all students. Refer to your student’s school for further information about Smart Start.
