Pollinators are an important part of gardens
A thriving backyard garden requires homeowners to take steps to ensure the garden has the best environment in which to grow and thrive. The right tools and components, including trowels, rakes, soil, amendments, and fertilizer, can help gardeners create beautiful spaces. It’s also important that pollinators feel welcome in the garden. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that one-third of all agricultural output depends on pollinators. The USDA notes...
Meet Willamette Riverkeeper’s new executive director
In Bob Sallinger’s eyes, a river is an effective means for channeling ideals and a litmus test for broader environmental health. “They (rivers) give people something to focus on in terms of access, equity, climate change and biodiversity. They are such a powerful reflection on how we are doing in those arenas,” he said. As the new executive director of Willamette Riverkeeper — which works to protect and restore the...
Over the Fence: Growing old with Mick
Here’s a recent headline from the news: “Mick Jagger, front man for the Rolling Stones, turns 80.” Wait — what? That can’t be right, can it? Yes, it can. It most shockingly, alarmingly and astoundingly can. If I mention that I’m growing old with Mick, some of you who follow my newsletter may think I'm referring to my cat “Mick Jagger.” He co-writes my letter, Cat-tankerous Literary News, and is full of information (along with other things too dastardly to mention.) ...
It's time to check your watering schedule and look after your rhubarb and asparagus
Each month, the OSU Extension provides reminders of essential garden chores, such as fertilizing, pest control, planting and maintenance. The recommendations in this calendar are not necessarily applicable to all areas of Oregon. For more information, contact your local Extension office. The Oregon State University Extension Service encourages sustainable gardening practices. Preventive pest management is emphasized over reactive pest control. Identify and monitor problems before acting and opt for the...
Drivers beware: I-5 to be closed though SW Portland June 28-July 1
Drivers need to be prepared for all lanes of a four mile stretch of I-5 through Southwest Portland to be closed from 9 a.m. Friday, June 28, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 1. The closures are necessary for the Oregon Department of Transportation to replace the I-5 bridge over Southwest 26th Avenue, a project that has been underway for over a year. They are needed to replace the deck of the bridge after the supporting structure has been improved. ...
U.S. Supreme Court-watchers in Oregon watch … and wait
For Oregonians awaiting two momentous rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court … well, as of Wednesday, June 26, they’re still waiting. With only a week left in its session, the high court on Wednesday sided with President Biden, rejecting efforts by some to limit White House pressure on social media firms regarding the flagging of disinformation. But the two most closely watched cases from an Oregon perspective didn’t get handed...
2024 Maybach GLS 600 is over the top luxury
In the world of luxury SUVs, there are very few that can compete with the Maybach GLS. The Bentley Bentayga and Rolls Royce Cullinan are really about the only SUVs that deliver comparable features. The Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus are more sport-oriented. Before we get too far in, a little explanation is in order. Maybach is a special ultra-luxury brand from the already luxurious Mercedes-Benz. Reading the current market carefully, Mercedes offers dozens of ways to customize and plus up any of their...

COLUMN | Milkweed + Honey: Lessons from my dad
It should surprise no one that this columnist became interested in gardening. It runs in the family. From my earliest memories, my dad, Bernie Schell, heaved on his big steel-toed boots every morning and came home filthy every evening from working in the dirt all day. Dad worked in landscaping in the high desert area of Twin Falls, Idaho, for four decades. He started at a golf course and then worked for a garden center before becoming self-employed. ...
Wilsonville to add pedestrian improvements as part of annual street maintenance work
The city of Wilsonville will soon begin construction to improve pedestrian accessibility and conduct other upgrades on segments of three roadways in town. The work is taking place on Bailey Street (the segment east of Boones Ferry Road), Boones Ferry Road (between Wilsonville Road and Bailey Street) and Boberg Road (between Boeckman Road and Barber Street). The road improvements include repairing base materials, repaving surfaces and adding new striping; pedestrian improvements include a mid-block pedestrian crossing, upgrading 15 pedestrian ramps and adding 10 pedestrian signal push buttons. The city hired Knife River Corporation-Northwest for construction, which is budgeted at around $3.4 million. As of Tuesday, June 25, it was not yet clear where or when the work would start, according to Wilsonville Communications and Marketing Manager Bill Evans.
Despite mild fire season forecast, agencies tell Oregon leaders they need to invest in workforce
Oregon is likely to face fewer big wildfires this summer than in previous years, but a lack of rural housing, coupled with unstable and often low pay, continues to create firefighter workforce challenges across the state and region. That was a big part of the message from state and federal fire and emergency response officials, who discussed this year’s fire outlook and what they need at a meeting Monday, June 24, at the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center. The Portland-based center is part of a larger...

Oregon Congresswoman Salinas introduces bill to provide disaster relief to farmworkers
U.S. Rep. Andrea Salinas of Oregon wants farmworkers to be eligible for disaster relief money when they lose wages during disasters and public health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic or 2021 heat wave that killed more than 100 Oregonians. Salinas, a Democrat who represents the 6th Congressional District, has introduced a bill, called the “Disaster Relief for Farm Workers Act,” that would compensate farmworkers for lost earnings due to events beyond their control that are tied to extreme weather and public health. The bill’s intent...
My opinion: Life after Measure 110, and what that could mean for Oregonians
On Nov. 3, 2020, Oregonians overwhelmingly voted to pass Ballot Measure 110 and decriminalize the possession of small amounts of certain controlled substances. Almost four years later, it is abundantly clear that the law did not work in the way voters had hoped it would. Because this was a voter-approved measure, the State Legislature’s role was purely procedural. I was still a state legislator representing House District 38 at the time, and it was my job to affirm the will of the people — not...
