My opinion: Federal government should work with Oregon to implement secure automatic voter registration via Medicaid
Last year, Oregon leaders passed a law to automatically register eligible Medicaid enrollees to vote. As a physician, I support this sensible measure to help close the voter registration gap for Medicaid enrollees, many of whom have been left out of having a say in the government that implements health care programs like Medicaid. Unfortunately, this new law is on hold until the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) act — which I’m urging them to do as soon as possible. House Bill...
Movie Review: Lawrence and Pratt are intergalactic “Passengers”
Movies that are set aboard big spaceships for long journeys, such as “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Silent Running,” can make you wonder how the folks onboard spend their time. Yes, it’s a lot of space, but it is still confined space. “Passengers” — which Starz airs Thursday, May 9, and Friday, May 10 — addresses that issue, with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt as the major characters awakened from a deep slumber after an asteroid hits their vessel that’s destined for a colonized planet. ...

Journalist: Focus on education, reducing demand in fentanyl epidemic
An investigative journalist and author says the current epidemic of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid more powerful than heroin, will not go away by stopping its flow into the United States. Ben Westhoff was the first Western journalist to visit labs in China, where its chemical precursors are made — though generally not the drug itself, which is illegal in China except for limited medical uses. Those chemical precursors are exported, and many end up in Mexico, where they are made into fentanyl and smuggled into...

Drugmakers’ price-cap claims are ‘Chicken Little,’ state official says
As the state of Oregon moves toward capping the prices of some prescription drugs, a bureaucrat tasked with shepherding the proposal is lashing out at “fear mongering” by the powerful pharmaceutical industry and its “proxies.” Ralph Magrish, executive director of the Oregon Prescription Drug Affordability Board, made the remarks during the April 17 board meeting. He didn’t single out any group by name, but his comments were clearly directed at patient advocacy groups that often align themselves with the pharmaceutical industry while receiving significant funding...
