Three pointers for perennials
Gardening is an engaging hobby that can provide a host of benefits, some of which may surprise even the most devoted gardeners. For example, the Harvard Medical School notes that just 30 minutes of gardening burns 135 calories, making gardening a fun and simple way to incorporate more exercise into your daily routine. In addition, scientists have long proven that gardening releases the hormones serotonin and dopamine in the brain, each associated with improved mood. ...
Health care groups enter Oregon gun control case
Eight groups representing Oregon health care professionals have asked an appeals court to clear the way for a delayed gun-control measure, arguing it would cut down on the firearm-related deaths and injuries they see first-hand. The coalition of groups representing doctors, nurses, physician associates and others argued in a brief filed June 14 that Measure 114, a 2022 voter-approved measure since tied up in legal challenges, would reduce what they characterized as Oregon’s rising gun violence. ...
Segment of Kinsman Road reopens for traffic
The segment of Kinsman Road between Wilsonville Road and Barber Street reopened to two-way traffic earlier this week, the city of Wilsonville announced. The northbound lane of the road had been closed due to pipeline installation for the Willamette Water Supply Program. While traffic can pass through again, work in the area isn’t entirely complete. “This summer, crews will install new ADA-compliant sidewalks and perform additional restoration work,” read a post from the city on X. “Please continue to drive carefully in project areas.” The WWSP is a collaboration between Tualatin Valley Water District, the city of Hillsboro and the city of Beaverton to develop a water supply source on the Willamette River in Wilsonville. Construction is expected to be complete in February 2025.
OPINION: The city of Wilsonville is wasting your tax dollars
Why is the city of Wilsonville sending post cards to city and county citizens maligning the state master plan for the Aurora Airport? Why has the city paid lobbyist Greg Leo using your hard-earned tax dollars each year over the past decade to constantly fight the Aurora airport? The city of Canby has no lobbyist and is not actively opposing the state airport master plan even though it's 4 miles from the airport. Aurora airport supports more than 1,200 jobs, is a key partner in...

What to know about reseeding or replanting your lawn
Spring marks the return of flowering plants and warm weather. And homeowners know that spring also ushers in the return of home renovation season. Homeowners undoubtedly have an extensive list of projects on their to-do list this spring, and that may include helping their lawns and gardens recover after a long winter. Unpredictable weather, including drought, excessive rainfall, and everything in between, can take its toll on a lawn. In certain instances, the best solution may be planting new grass. However, homeowners can consider these...

EV Roundup: We drive and compare new EVs
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to drive several new electric vehicles on the same day as part of the Midwest Automotive Media Association's Spring Rally. It was a useful chance to compare and contrast EVs from several different automakers to see what each has to offer. I started with the all-new Volvo EX30, which is due at dealers later this year and currently available for reservation. The Volvo is a four-door hatchback starting at about $35,000. It will have about 268 horsepower...

State economist reflects on 14 years on the job
For Mark McMullen, who just wrapped up more than 13 years as Oregon’s state economist, coming to Oregon was both difficult and easy. The hard part was his career path after he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Pomona College and a master’s degree in public economics from the University of Pennsylvania. His first job was as a researcher for the Congressional Budget Office, which Congress created almost two decades earlier to provide information and analyses independent of the White House Office of Management...
My opinion: Oregon may be putting patients in the middle of bad policy
In 2021 the Oregon Legislature passed Senate Bill 844, creating the Oregon Prescription Drug Affordability Board (Oregon PDAB). Today, the board is charged with annually identifying nine drugs and one insulin product that it determines may create affordability challenges for the Oregon health care systems or high out-of-pocket costs for Oregonians. It is also charged with developing a mechanism for establishing upper payment limits on those drugs it has reviewed. Oregon Bioscience Association—along with the voices of many patient groups and health leaders—is growing increasingly...
