Wimberley Village Youth Summer Reading Program kicked off last week with a Mad Hatter Pirate show, a petting zoo, snow cones, face painting, hot dogs, and booths staffed by Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists. Highlights of the petting zoo included a kangaroo named Rosie and a wallaby.

The Summer Kick-off was sponsored this year by a generous donation from the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library which was recently named non-profit organization for the month of June by KWVH.

The program opened with the Mad Hatter Pirate Puppet Show emphasizing this summer’s National Library theme, “Adventure Begins at Your Library!” Book bags, with reading logs, and other reading surprises were handed out to each patron.

Outside, young patrons were greeted with the All Things Safari Petting Zoo which included Master Gardeners who gave kids free pots to decorate along with soil and choice of seeds to plant.

Fit 4 Moms offered creative bookmarks for kids to design along with selfie photo frame backgrounds.

Free snow cones, face painting, cookies, lemonade and hot dogs were offered to young Wimberley readers on the patio behind the library’s new expansion.

Youth readers in the program are encouraged to read books this summer and to turn in reading logs for prizes and brag tags. For each log turned in, a reader receives a brag tag and a prize of their choice. Miss Beth, the children’s librarian, is known in the library as the “Queen” of prizes.” The Summer Reading Program runs from June 5th to August 16 for ages 0-12.

Along with the Youth Summer Reading Program, the library offers a Teen and Adult Reading Program.
