Arctic blast grips Wimberley
Based on weather forecasts from the National Weather Service, the Wimberley Independent School District, the Katherine Anne Porter School and the Blanco River Academy closed schools on Tuesday. Both WISD and Blanco River Academy anticipated a delayed start for classes on Wednesday, January 17. According to the National Weather service, another Arctic front will move across our area late Thursday night into Friday. Due to minimal moisture, no precipitation is expected on Friday and Saturday. Although it appears that it will not be as cold as the previous Arctic air mass, a hard freeze is still expected Friday night and Saturday morning. On Sunday there is a 30% chance of showers, increasing to a 50% chance by evening. More showers are likely on Monday, next week. Citizens are advised that it is still not too late to take cold weather precautions. Keep pets indoors as they are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia, as are humans. Protect tender plants from the cold and prevent freezing and the possible bursting of outdoor water pipes by either wrapping them, draining them or allowing them to drip slowly. In-ground sprinkler systems should be drained. Above-ground pipes should be covered to protect them from freezing.

The drought that gripped Wimberley lasted 61 days from June 22 until August 22, effectively parching the area for two months. Tropical storm Harold passed 250 miles to our south and was responsible for...
