Wimberley Intercommunity Network dissolves, passes the torch
In a brief ceremony at Barnabas Connection last week, Cookie Hagemeier, the Acting President of the Wimberley Intercommunity Network, presented checks to two local nonprofit relief organizations following the dissolution of WIN. With the remaining funds in their coffers, they elected to pass the torch to My Neighbor’s Keeper and the Barnabas Connection. WIN was formed following a flood on Cypress Creek in 1997 that killed two and affected 40 households. “That event took place prior to the incorporation of Wimberley,” wrote Hagemeier in a recent history of the organization. “. . . so there was no established city government and no...

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas...
, , All over Wimberley, the turkey and pumpkins have been stowed to make way for the glittering lights and ornaments of Christmas, Hanukkah and the other holiday observances and rituals of the season. Gone are the autumn leaves from the Cypress Creek bridge and in their place are the holly and wreaths depicting the winter celebrations ahead. Businesses around the square and in the Quarter Shops are hanging lights, decking columns and creating vignettes to get customers into the holiday spirit. Winter’s Eve, with its shopping, food, music, and fun activities for kids of all ages unwraps this weekend with Santa leading a parade on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. to collect unwrapped toys for The Christmas Store at the Barnabas Connection. Pancake Breakfasts are on the horizon, as are holiday performances by the Wimberley Players, the Community Chorus and the Starlight Symphony. Emily Ann’s Trail of Lights beckons with eight miles of exhibits, musical performances on most nights, train rides, and, best of all, evidence that Santa is in the area. Wimberley participates in another ritual of the season - giving back. Support for members of the community who need a boost abounds as Wimberley shares her good fortune with others.

Imagine going home for the Thanksgiving holidays with your new husband only to find your parents’ living room packed with a hundred relatives, neighbors and friends eager to size up the fellow who’d captured your heart. That’s what Sarah Jarosz did this past weekend when she and husband Jeff Picker performed for WVACA’s “Stars Over Wimberley” concert series. If the truth be told, not everyone in the audience knew that the couple had wed. When KWVH’s Coach Smith let the news “slip” in his introductory remarks before the show, a few gasps were heard around the room. The question in everyone’s...
WAG receives check from Saori Weavers
Sure to help with veterinary fees associated with a new crop of puppies, Saori weaver Kathy Utts handed over a check for more than $3,000 to the Executive Director of the Wimberley Adoption Group and Rescue, Pat Davis, next to their boot at the group’s shop, Treasures on Twelve. “We are totally elated! This will go towards the care of ten puppies recently born in our care for shots, spaying and neutering services,” said Davis who is one of the group’s founders. “Last year we received a donation from Kathy Utts and the Texas Freestyle Textile Retreat that was half this amount. This is over the top generous!” Utts, who co-organized the textile retreat, has been a friend to Davis and the WAG organization for years. The donations from the November event, she said, were helped by early voting by locals at the community center. “People opened their pocketbooks to WAG while they visited the polling area,” said Utts. “They were very generous. Coupled with our successful retreat, we were able to give more than last year. We are so proud to do so.”

Riffs, Roams and Raves: A Weekly Column
Riff: Dale Watson When Dale Watson took to the stage at Susanna’s Kitchen last week, he got right down to the business of tickling our funny bones. Armed with sound effects on his phone, a bottle of Lone Star beer, songs from his acoustic album “Starvation Box” released in July, and his million dollar baritone, he had the audience in the palm of his hand by the second song. He joked and mugged, told stories, spread rumors and copped to foibles so earnestly that, to a person, each of us was thoroughly disarmed. All of it provided the burlap to support...
