Breakup lines from pet owners
Join Wimberley humorist Susan Rigby as she attempts to navigate “the small stuff.” I had a guy break up with me using four words I will never forget, “My cat is missing.” Now, we had been out at least four hours but he didn’t tell me this until we got into a minor argument. What could I say? I loved my animals too. Although I have no doubt that it was true, I also know that he was not good at dealing with issues, so this was his avoidance technique. We did date a little longer, but it didn’t last because...

Wimberley entrepreneur launches pioneering dog toy
, , , Wimberley resident Jerome McLaughlin and his business partner Flynn have created a dog toy that could make conventional ball launchers obsolete. Called the GITIT MAX, the toy consists of a donut-shaped ring that is thrown with a flexible launcher. The innovative design of the ring generates an unusually fast topspin speed that triggers a dog’s chase instinct by running along the ground after it is launched. “If your dog could invent a fetch toy, it would be this one,” said McLaughlin, founder of Top Spin Toys LLC. “Dogs don’t want to retrieve stuff; they want to chase things.” According...

Life Lessons from Seymour
Join Wimberley humorist Susan Rigby as she attempts to navigate “the small stuff.” Without saying a word, Seymour, my seven-pound chihuahua, has taught me how to live life to the fullest. Show your love to the person you live with every day. Seymour is genuinely happy to see me every morning. He shows me by wagging his tail, looking me in the eyes and licking me. He rolls over to allow me to enjoy the feel of his tummy. The longer I rub his tummy, the more he seems to love me. Be persistent when working toward your goals. When Seymour wants to take a...

Planting milkweed brings beneficial butterflies, bees
, It’s so hot, the cows around here are giving condensed milk. Thankfully, my little wet-weather creek is flowing right along, thanks to recent abundant rains. But I don’t hear any frogs croaking as I did years ago after a good rain. I guess they just can’t survive in the long, dry periods between showers. Hot weather certainly makes the birdbath in my backyard more attractive to birds. I fill it every day with fresh water, and sometimes more than once if the birds have been especially splashy. Boy, they really love to flutter around in that shallow water, with droplets flying all...
