Library kicks off summer reading program
, , , Wimberley Village Youth Summer Reading Program kicked off last week with a Mad Hatter Pirate show, a petting zoo, snow cones, face painting, hot dogs, and booths staffed by Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists. Highlights of the petting zoo included a kangaroo named Rosie and a wallaby. The Summer Kick-off was sponsored this year by a generous donation from the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library which was recently named non-profit organization for the month of June by KWVH. The program opened with the Mad Hatter Pirate Puppet Show emphasizing this summer’s National Library theme, “Adventure Begins at Your...
Exploring Nature
To say that someone is a “bird brain” is not considered a compliment, but an insult. And that is a shame because a bird’s brain is one marvelous creation. Just imagine the smarts required to fly thousands of miles during migration and wind up in exactly the right spot – without using a map. And by the way, we are just past the peak of spring bird migration in Texas. The period from April 27 to May 2 was our busiest period as birds returned from places down south. For the northern states, the peak period was May 15 to...
Seymour, The Music Critic
Join Wimberley humorist Susan Rigby as she attempts to navigate “the small stuff.” Normally, I would not take criticism about my singing from a dog. Everyone else seems to be fine with my singing when I am in a group singing Happy Birthday. The problem seems to arise when I am home, with just Seymour. I will be listening to some oldies that I know most of the words to and begin humming, then singing quietly and finally getting into the music with loud singing and a little dancing. That seems to be when the critic named Seymour lets me know...
On the Air with KWVH - Salwa Khan
, When listeners tune into the KWVH program, Mothering Earth, hosted by Salwa Khan, PhD, every Sunday at noon, they’ll get one very special and precious gift: the voice of reason. Her program covers such topics as water use and conservation, the problem of plastics, alternative energy, pollinators, the use of native plants, hemp, the problem of lawns, perennial food crops, food waste, green alleys, electronic waste, the use of pesticides, and...
Bel Canto teams up with the Starlight Symphony to perform horse dancing
In a very unusual pairing of musicians and equestrians, the Starlight Symphony Orchestra will give a live performance at Bel Canto Farms to play music for riders presenting musical dressage routines. Riders will perform Dressage Musical Freestyle in the Bel Canto arena on June 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. From the French meaning “training,” dressage is an equestrian sport in which a horse and rider perform from memory a series of predetermined movements. Dressage takes years of hard work and patient training to master. Musical dressage means the horse and rider perform the movements to music. Dressage Musical Freestyle is also...
Federal forecasters predict the highest number of storms ever for 2024 season
Federal forecasters are predicting between 17 and 25 named storms will form this hurricane season — the highest number of storms the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has ever predicted before the start of the season on June 1. The agency announced Thursday at a press conference that Texas and the rest of the Gulf and East coasts are most likely to see an “above-average” hurricane season in 2024. NOAA defines an average Atlantic hurricane season as one with 14 named storms, of which three are stronger hurricanes, based on data from 1991 to 2020. Of the storms predicted this year, four...
Bullfighters risk lives protecting bull riders
Bullfighting is considered to be one of the most dangerous jobs with bullfighters actively – and intentionally – putting their bodies on the line to protect fallen bull riders. As bullfighter Miles Svoboda puts it, you don’t come away injury free. “I have been hooked and broke three ribs,” Svoboda said. “Then at a high school rodeo, I got hooked and dislocated a shoulder. Then a month ago, I was working a hang up and the bull kicked me, breaking three more ribs.” Yet Svoboda gets back in the arena night in and night out to protect riders despite the bumps and bruises. For...
Bluebonnet Palliative Care holds butterfly memorial service for family members
, Wimberley hospice workers and staff at Blue Bonnet Palliative Care held a memorial service last week to say goodbye to patients who had been in their care for the past 18 months. As part of the service, butterflies were released into the open air of Blue Hole park. Family members met with nursing staff and Blue Bonnet owners, Scott and Colleen Ritter. Following a few remarks and the reading of the names of those who had died, families were invited to share memories of their loved ones. Eight people stood and offered heartfelt gratitude for the care their mothers, husbands,...

Service at Veterans Memorial Plaza remembers those who served
, , , At a Memorial Day tribute to veterans who died as a result of their service, the public was asked to remember their lives, their sacrifice and the families left behind. At the highest point of the EmilyAnn gardens at Veterans Memorial Plaza, the solemn ceremony was opened by the Director of the Veterans Plaza, Mike Lukowiak. In his opening remarks he told the assembled crowd that Memorial Day was once known as Decoration Day. “Memorial Day originated in the years following the Civil War, and now 155 years later, it is a day of grief and celebration, together. We...
Memorial Day Rodeo recap
, , The Memorial Day Open Pro Rodeo held in the VFW Arena last weekend proved to be an exciting event as a bronco rider was pitched over the fence and thrown into the stands. He emerged unhurt, gamely waving his hat to show that he was not injured. During the bull riding event, a bullfighter whose job it is to distract the bull after the ride, was tossed in the air by the bull. He also escaped unhurt. Another highlight was diminutive barrel racer, Kylie Rui, who rode a very fast horse around the barrels in a short 16.7 seconds. Brought by the Lester Meier Rodeo Company, the rodeo is the main fundraiser for the local Wimberley 4H Club.
