Lady Texan volleyball sweeps Fredericksburg
In the start of the second round of district play, the Wimberley Lady Texans swept the rival Fredericksburg Lady Billies 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-19). It was a rocky start for the Lady Texans in the first set as the two teams were neck and neck.. With the Lady Texans down 22-20 late in the set, Head Coach Stephanie Barthels called a timeout. “I talked about our energy being dead,” Barthels said. “The stands are packed and it’s middle school night, we have to show these girls what we’re made of.” The Lady Texans responded by going on a 5-1 run winning the first...
Eclipse to dim Texas skies
An annular solar eclipse will visit Texas this week, six months before the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. This month’s eclipse officially begins in Texas on Oct. 14 at 11:41 a.m. and ends at noon, lasting for a few seconds to up to five minutes (depending on where it is viewed). Those inside the path of the annular solar eclipse will see the sun as a thin ring, almost, but not completely, eclipsed by the moon. Daylight will be dimmed considerably. Although the sky will not go dark like a total solar eclipse, it is still crucial for viewers...

County deputies use ‘Eyes on the Road’
Few drivers may be aware that there are cameras in place in town that routinely use license plate recognition software to scan plates, providing information to police in a moment’s notice if a vehicle is suspected of being involved in a crime. Hays County Sheriff’s deputies recently arrested a person who was later charged in connection to a murder after using the Flock Safety License Plate Recognition system. According to police, a man who had died from a gunshot wound was found at a gas station on Sept. 7. Deputies said that they reviewed surveillance footage and images from one of the...

Wimberley gets new pickleball courts
Four new pickleball courts opened for play last month on the grounds of the Unity of Wimberley church. On hand to celebrate the opening were Mimi Curry and John Falcón, who helped encourage Unity to refurbish their existing tennis courts and create four courts for pickleball play. “There was so much interest out there and we wanted to help build a vibrant Pickleball community in Wimberley,” said Curry, who is an instructor. “We thank Unity for their tremendous support.” More encouragement for the project came from Carly and Nathaniel Bruno, and thanks to a generous gift from Keith and Juli Moore, Carly’s parents,...

Autumnal protections against oak wilt
With drought, ice storms, harsh summer heat and water restrictions, many of the Hill Country’s precious trees are suffering and dying, some infected with a deadly fungus. In autumn, it is a normal process for leaves to change colors and fall; nighttime increases, and daytime shortens. As the weather cools, trees begin the process of conserving moisture within their trunks to prevent drying out. They begin shedding or dropping their leaves (a process called “abscission”) to spend less energy through the colder months. The chlorophyll production in the leaves slows down and then stops; eventually, all the chlorophyll in the leaf...

Casino Night hits the jackpot
With the year’s last supermoon blazing overhead, KWVH’s Casino Night at Rancho Mirando in Fischer proved to be a hit. More than 200 guests ponied up for the chance to go head to head with the elusive Lady Luck. Blackjack, roulette, craps, poker and other games of chance offered wagerers the chance to win one of many raffle prizes. The more gamers won at the tables, the better their chance to win top prizes of twonight stays in Rockport (next to George Strait’s beach house); Hot Springs, AR; or Spoon Mountain Glamping in Wimberley. The Hot Springs stays were hotly contested. Two...
Commissioners honor Hispanic Heritage Month
The Hays County Commissioners Court proclaimed Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month at their regularly scheduled meeting last week. This recognition was given as part of the meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 19 in San Marcos. The proclamation stated that the Coahuiltecan people, also known as Hispanic, have lived in Hays County for thousands of years. “This ancient Indigenous civilization thrived long before the United States and Texas were formed,” the proclamation explained. “Hays County was home to Hispanic families who lived here before its founding, as shown in the first census taken on July 12, 1809, on the El...
Local artist chosen for international exhibition in Equatorial Guinea
Wimberley artist Maxine Price has the honor of having three of her large oil paintings exhibited in the United States Department of State’s Ambassador’s Residence Program in the United States Embassy in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea along with the work of a few other Texas artists. Ambassador David R. Gilmour and his wife, Judith Gilmour, both attended the University of Texas at Austin where they fell in love. Price had previously shown one of her paintings at the U.S. Embassy in Leon, Togo, Ambassador Gilmour’s previous post. From his new post in Malabo, the Ambassador wrote, “Judith and I chose the theme “Home”...
Richard’s Rainwater addresses water scarcity
The scarcity of rainfall, the prolonged drought and ongoing population surge have central Texans worried about how to remedy the dwindling aquifers of the region. The people of Richard’s Rainwater believe they have a blueprint to solve the problems not only locally but globally. Since 1994, Richard Heinichen — the innovator and founder of Richard’s Rainwater in Dripping Springs — has been preaching the benefits of rainwater harvesting. Instead of pulling water from the ground, he said there is plenty to be harvested from the skies. Not only is rainwater pure and free from pollutants and man-made contaminants, its collection is...
Five charged with human trafficking
In the second major series of arrests in recent weeks in Hays County, the Kyle Police Department announced in a press release that officers had arrested five people in connection to a human smuggling case. The release stated that smugglers were trying to ransom victims demanding families pay additional money. Police stated that at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17, the Kyle Police Department dispatch received a call from a person saying a relative was being held for ransom by alleged human smugglers. Kyle police officers responded to a residence on Voyager Cove to monitor activities while more information was gathered, according...
Riffs, Roams and Raves: A Weekly Column
Riffs: Carl Rabenaldt’s Calendar A big shout out goes to Carl Rabenaldt for his Live Music Calendar available each week in the View. At the recent performance of Alejandro Escovedo, presented by WVACA at the Wimberley Players playhouse, we had a second to exchange a few words about the calendar. He volunteered a few remarks about the time required to compile the list and I could easily imagine the hours he spends to scour multiple websites and other sources for the information he provides. The list provides a quick reference for names, dates and times, but also shows how much music...
