What’s wrong with me? I hate resealable food bags
I know those are strong words but has anyone ever really been able to open those bags and reseal them? It is impossible. They must have been invented by the same happy drunk who just wanted a laugh. I have tried resealable bags of sliced cheese, luncheon meats, salad mix and guacamole, and none of those bags reseal. Some make you think they are different because they give you a little groove to help start the opening of the bag. But when you tear along the groove (if you are strong enough), it doesn’t even open the bag enough to get...

Derby Day
, , , , In what must be the most elaborate party in town, KWVH’s Kentucky Derby Party Presented by Ozona Bank came across the finish line in top style to celebrate one of the greatest traditions of Spring and to raise much-needed money for Wimberley’s community radio station. More than 300 guests watched as Mystik Dan edged by Sierra Leone in a very close photo finish to win $3.1 million. In second place, Sierra Leone, won $1 million and the third place winner, Forever Young, took home $500,000. Held at The Videre Estate, guests watched the 150th Kentucky Derby on a captivating 16 by 12 foot screen, drank customary Mint Juleps, placed bids, wore extravagant hats and Derby gear, and posed with Star Wars characters during the fun, high-spirited afternoon. The community gave generously in what will be, according to General Manager Tim Kiesling, “the largest fundraiser in KWVH history.” Early results showed that the live auction garnered more than $41,000 and the Paddles Up auction, to complete the station’s tower project, raised more than $19,000, before expenses.
Swimming at Jacob’s Well suspended again for 2024 season
Hays County officials have again suspended swimming at Jacob’s Well for the 2024 swimming season, May 1 through September 30. Katherine Sturdivant, Hays County Parks Education Coordinator, said factors affecting the flow at Jacob’s Well is a multiyear drought and increased demand on the Trinity Aquifer, which supplies Jacob’s Well. “Texas’ drought of record extended from 1950-57, but according to written and oral histories, Jacob’s Well did not stop flowing. Now, we’ve got a lot more folks relying on that aquifer, and we have seen Jacob’s Well quit flowing for a sixth time,” Sturdivant said in a news release. In October 2022, the spring flow reached zero, making it the fifth time in recorded history that Jacob’s Well had stopped flowing. Since then, Jacob’s Well has remained at or near zero flow for approximately two years. Although swimming is suspended, Jacob’s Well Natural Area will remain open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for hiking and viewing the spring. Jacob’s Well Natural Area will also be extending its Saturday morning guided tour program through May.

Alternative Lawn Care
Most lawns are covered with weeds that survived and thrived the long, hot, dry summer of 2023. If you are dreading the thought of fighting weeds and spending time and labor to maintain your turf grass or pay someone to do it, then think of the alternative. While your yard dimensions remain the same, you can reduce the size of what is covered in turf grass. Nationwide, 50 million acres are covered by turf grasses that annually consume three trillion gallons of water and require 70 million pounds of pesticides. Lawn fertilizer runoff ends up in storm drains or natural...

Woodcreek held its third annual Arbor Day celebration last Saturday. Karl Flocke with the Texas A&M Forest Service gave a presentation on oak wilt and visitors enjoyed demonstrations from Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists, the Native Plant Society and Tree Folks. Two white oaks, chosen for their increased tolerance to oak wilt, were donated by Jacob McElroy and Simple Leaf Tree Care and given away in a drawing, with the lucky winners being John Hull and Dennis Riker. Monica Rasco entertained the children with a storytime and there were other special presentations and activities for kids. The Mario’s Kitchen food truck provided fare for celebrants.
