‘One Page Salon’ is part of Wimberley Area Writers 2024 launch
The Writers League of Texas’ “One Page Salon’’ will be part of the Wimberley Area Writers 2024 launch on April 30 at the 220 Gallery in Wimberley. Called “one of the best nights of entertainment in Austin” by the Austin American-Statesman, five readers, one at a time, will share one page of a new work or a work in progress. In addition to reading their work, authors will enjoy friendly banter with emcee Becka Oliver, WLT Executive Director, and strive to answer three provocative literary-related questions. The One Page Salon monthly reading series began in Austin a decade ago. Wimberley is the first-ever stop of an “On The Road” edition of the event. Patrick Cox and Eileen “Chick” Morgan of the Wimberley Area Writers told members in an email this week that “they are thrilled to be partnering with both the Writers League of Texas and WimberleyArts.org” for the April 30 event. The Salon will be held on the backyard patio of the 220 Fine Art Gallery at 220 Old Kyle Road. Doors open at 6 and the program begins at 6:30 p.m. and will continue until approximately 8 p.m. A cash bar provided by Ranch Brand Wine and Spirits will be available.

Vibes: Big Bend pt. III
Einstein argued that “everything in life is vibration.” String theory proposes that everything we see as matter is actually vibration in loops of string, each with its own frequency. It’s quite a beautiful thought, if you imagine the pluck of a string on an instrument initiating a vibration that exists forever, and each of us is nothing but a musical note resonating— sometimes in harmony, sometimes in dissonance— with all of the other notes around us. My exploration of West Texas had me thinking about the unique vibrations of place. I live in a place considered by many to be an...

What do Mothers want on Mother’s Day?
May 12 marks Mother’s Day in the U.S., a day when mothers become the focus of children and partners who want to show their love and appreciation for their hard work and devotion. Traditional gifts include cards, flowers, chocolates and special meals which may include breakfast in bed. According to many moms, the gift they want to receive is recognition and appreciation, a day off or time alone, a spa day or massage, a vacation, a night or weekend alone in a hotel, a heartfelt note or letter, a period of peace and serenity, or to be pampered. Moms, write the View and tell us what you’d like for your special day: wimberleyview@gmail.com.

WHS Softball: Wimberley drops two district games
It was a rough week for the Texans. Wimberley dropped their Tuesday home game against the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies 15-0 before losing the Friday road game to the Davenport Wolves 120. Despite the two losses, Wimberley has qualified for the playoffs with Tuesday’s game against Boerne that will determine whether the Texans play as either the three seed or the four seed. In their home game against the Billies, Texans could not overcome the powerful Fredericksburg offense that scored 15 unanswered runs in the first three innings before the game was called via the runrule. The Texan offense failed to register a hit against the Billies. On Friday, in their game against Davenport, the Texans were jumped by the Wolves who scored nine runs in the first inning before adding three more in the second inning. Wimberley managed just two hits in the game before the game was called via the runrule. Wimberley will look to bounce back Tuesday night against Boerne, which occurred after the time of press.
Paying homage to the chickadee
, Let us pay homage to the chickadee, a small bird with a big personality and one of the regulars, along with titmice and cardinals, at my backyard bird feeder. I’m told the Carolina chickadee has a call that goes “chick-a-deedeedee- dee.” I don’t think I have ever heard one call. This is an acrobatic bird that can feed upside down a well as right side up. Of all birds, it is the one most likely to eat seeds from your hand. It weighs about a half ounce. Harold Osborne wrote a poem about this bird: I think that I shall never see/A...

On the Air with KWVH and Teenage Men
, Remember the clubhouse scene from “Stand By Me,” the 1986 coming of age film by Rob Reiner? Four teenage boys hang out, play cards and trade insults in the sanctum of their treehouse. The hour I spent with Benjamin Hotchkiss and Todd Crusham of KWVH’s Teenage Men program that airs Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. felt just like that. Unfortunately the show’s third member, Paul English, could not join us the day we met. These fast friends share what they characterize as “a maniacal passion for music.” Each has vivid memories of the songs they listened to as teens....
