On the Air with KWVH and Bruce Cloud
, When you tune into KWVH’s Jazz Connection on Sundays from 8 to10 p.m., you’re in for a whole lot of smooth. Host Bruce Cloud sets a super chill tone and nothing is more conducive to climbing into the evening’s groove than two hours of jazz from the “Cloud.” He will check in from time to time to let you know he’s still steering the ship, playing finely curated jazz from the ‘60s to the ‘90s. He grew up listening to his mom’s classical jazz on hefty 78 rpm records in his home town of San Antonio. In 1969, he migrated...

Reforesting Jacob’s Well with new tree technology
The last few years have been challenging for Texas trees, with Austin’s hottest summer on record, extended periods of drought and back-to-back years of winter ice storms. TreeFolks, Central Texas’ urban forestry nonprofit, plants on average nearly 100,000 trees and saplings each year, and is working with Jacob’s Well Natural Area to pilot a new system aimed to more than triple survival rates among newly planted trees. This spring Tree-Folks planted 2.2 acres with almost 2,000 native and adapted tree species at Jacob’s Well. The varieties of trees include shade trees and fruiting and flowering species, including Pecan, Texas Mountain Laurel, Elderberry,...

, , The new must-do destination for your Wimberley Bucket List is the new mural at the Wimberley Valley Museum at the Wimberley Institute of Cultures, 14068 RR12. Stretching to cover all four walls of a shed directly behind the museum, the hand painted mural tells the story of Wimberley at different times in its history. One side depicts the area’s first water wheel that powered a saw- and grist mill owned by William Winters in the 1850s. On another side, the mural shows the area in the late 1800s. Bloom into Spring: The beauty of native Texas perennials
The sun is warmer, the birds are singing, the snails are snailing and the Texas native wildflowers and perennials are blooming. The sight of fields alive with colorful blooms signals a joyful spring for many Central Texans. These flowers — reseeding annuals and herbaceous perennials — thrive in our harsh Texas environment and are tolerant of wildlife. Most wildflowers are reseeding annuals which drop their seeds when the blooms are spent. These seeds lie dormant until spring, when the rain and sunshine encourage blooming. Our Texas Bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis) is the star of the show in March and April; frequently in...

EMS Director saves man during breakfast in Wimberley
The men’s Bible study group meets every Thursday. Each week, twenty or so men gather in the community room at the Wimberley EMS station and discuss a book of the Bible. After the 6 a.m. meeting a handful of the members head out for breakfast. The routine doesn’t vary much. Until Thursday, February 8. That day there was a little added excitement. The group — which originated at Cypress Creek Church but now has members from many local churches — meets early so some of the men can get to work on time. The others gather for breakfast and talk about...
On the Air with KWVH and Rootin’ Around Radio with Mike August
, I have to confess that I find the name of Mike August’s radio program that airs every Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. really entertaining. If you’ve ever watched porcine rooting and snuffling, you’ll find that it is dedicated and somehow dear. It never fails to turn up something interesting. And so it is with Mike’s program. He asks everyone who appears on his show to bring five of their favorite songs. At first the request feels like you’re being asked to bring your A-game to the stage, but Mike doesn’t see it that way. There’s no judgment, he just...
