National Ice Cream Day came and went last Sunday, but it's been a summer that has called for ice cream every day, given how hot and humid it's been.

So we asked our loyal readers to tell us where to get their favorite scoop of chocolate, vanilla or rocky road, and you did not disappoint. Over 6,000 votes were cast in our online poll last week, and the winner is ...

Murdock Farm and Dairy Bar, located at 62 Elmwood Road, Winchendon .

Murdock Farm and Dairy Bar tallied up nearly 2,500 votes, and claimed top honors with almost 41% of all votes cast.

Placing second in our poll was Lickity Splitz, 231 Main St., Winchendon . Lickity Splitz received almost 1,800 votes.

Izzie's Ice Cream, 277 Gardner Road, Templeton placed third with just over 1,500 votes.

About Murdock Farm and Dairy Bar

June B. Girouard, who co-owns the farm and dairy bar with her grandson Andrew Brooks Jr., said that all 50 flavors of ice cream are made onsite with quality ingredients. At the height of summer, Girouard said they make as many as 250 gallons of ice cream each week.

Girouard, who makes all the ice cream herself with the help of one employee, observed the farm is a place where everybody loves to come.

"We offer a good quality product, and the girls do a great job with customer service," she said.

In addition to serving great ice cream at a great price (cash only), the farm and dairy bar are located in a nice spot for a family outing with goats, long horn cattle, peacocks and chickens for everyone to enjoy.

Popular flavors include vanilla, black raspberry, chocolate, rum raisin and strawberry cheesecake. Girouard also recommended the Bear Tracks, which is chocolate ice cream with peanut butter cup pieces and marshmallows.

The ice cream stand is open from mid-May to mid-September, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. every day in the summer.

A little history of the Murdock Farm and Dairy Bar

The Murdock Farm and Dairy Bar dates back to 1885 and was started by Girouard's husband's grandfather. At 83, Girouard is the last of her generation still alive, and she still works on the 400-acre farm every day.

In addition to making the ice cream and overseeing the dairy bar, Girouard does all the scheduling, ordering and bookkeeping.

"I'm just glad I can still do it," she said.

In addition to the ice cream stand, Murdock Farm sells hay, which is their winter product.

"We used to produce, process and deliver all our own milk, but we haven't had cows in over 20 years," Girouard said.

The ice cream stand got its start in 1964, almost by accident.

"We had extra milk from the cows," Girouard said. "So we opened the ice cream stand."

    And the rest is history.
