WINDHAM, Conn. (WTNH) — Connecticut State Police officials say a Canterbury man was arrested Sunday after allegedly pointing a knife at the manager and customers at a grocery store.

Troopers and Willimantic police officers responded to a grocery store at 422 Route 32 around 6:08 p.m. for report of an active disturbance.

Investigators learned the suspect- later identified as 31-year-old Alexander Clemmons- got into a verbal altercation with a male customer outside the store, during which he pointed a knife at the man and a female customer that was with him.

Store employees attempted to intervene, but Clemmons reportedly argued with them too. A female customer started recording him, at which time troopers said he put away the knife and pulled out a can of pepper spray.

Eventually, another female customer approached and indicated she and Clemmons would leave in her vehicle. As they started to leave, the store manager told them they were not allowed to return to the store.

Clemmons is alleged to have gotten back out of the vehicle then, pointing the knife at the store manager and saying he planned to return. This prompted an employee to call 911.

Clemmons was charged with second-degree breach of peace, reckless endangerment, threatening, and third-degree criminal trespassing.

He was held on a $20,000 cash/surety bond and was scheduled to appear for arraignment at Danielson Superior Court on July 15.
