RECLAIMING NATURE AT WATERLOO ARTS
From 1974-1978, the Summit National site in Deerfield, Ohio, a former coal strip mine, was used as a waste disposal facility for oil, resin, paint and metal-plating sludge, and flammable, chlorinated solvents. The EPA subsequently conducted a cleanup and recently removed a section of this site from the Superfund List, encouraging its reuse. Visiting this site, artist Arron Foster created an ongoing response project, documenting the cycles of devastation and recovery and illustrating the persistence of nature. Through his work, utilizing printmaking and photography, Foster hopes to inspire local awareness, activism and care. During the July 5 Walk All Over Waterloo, at 7pm, Foster will discuss his exhibition, “Haints and Specters”, currently on view in the gallery at Waterloo Arts. Also on view in the cafe space is Alison Alsup’s “Ohio: Love for the Heart of it All”, a delightful travelog in drawings and paintings of the artist’s months long biking and rollerblading trek throughout Ohio.
