If you’re like many New Jerseyans, you probably haven’t given much thought to squirrels, except maybe wondering how to keep them out of your birdfeeders. They’re so common in every New Jersey community – rural, suburban and urban – that a lot of people don’t give them a second glance.

New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS), a division of New York Blood Center, which provides blood for local patients, is looking for a few good volunteers. The blood drive volunteer is an integral member of our team whose tasks include assisting donors with registration and/or at the refreshment area. No medical background necessary. Volunteers should be outgoing to provide friendly customer service, be able to perform tasks as needed and must provide proof of COVID Vaccination prior to volunteering. Must have transportation. All training is provided including additional precautions for the safety of our team and blood donors. For additional information call or text Sharon Zetts, manager of NJBS Volunteer Services at 732-850-8906 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday.

Deer management to continue through new year
The Mercer County Park Commission has been approved for a Community Based Deer Management (CBDM) permit from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. The CBDM permit allows for additional opportunities to improve forest understory and the overall ecological condition of natural areas through deer reductions beyond standard state hunting regulations. Reducing deer overpopulation also improves public safety by reducing deer-vehicle collisions, according to a release through Mercer County.

Russian officials have indicated they would like to strike a deal to free imprisoned Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who grew up in Princeton. Gershkovich, who graduated from Princeton High School in 2010, was arrested March 29 in Yekaterinburg, Russia, on charges of espionage, according to published reports. He was on a reporting assignment when he was arrested.

East Windsor Township Police blotter
A 30-year-old East Windsor Township woman was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident after her vehicle struck a utility pole on Oak Creek Road Dec. 11. She allegedly left the scene, but a police officer found her on Devonshire Drive. She was charged after failing field sobriety tests. She was processed and released.

New ride
The Hightstown First Aid Squad (HFAS) has a new ride thanks to the Roosevelt First Aid Squad. The process for acquiring the ambulance spanned several months. During that time, officers of both agencies discussed call volume, membership and our need for a new ambulance. HFAS was able to receive this low milage ambulance at no cost to our residents!
