CEC opens application process for Education Scholarship

    By Staff Reports,

    2024-02-16

High school seniors whose households receive electricity from Community Electric Cooperative have until April 1 to apply for a $1,000 scholarship they can put toward their postsecondary education this fall. The scholarships are awarded through the Education Scholarship Foundation administered by the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives, of which Community Electric is a member.

Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic achievement, and a personal statement by the applicant. Funds can be applied toward tuition, student fees, room and board, or textbooks. Additional details and the online application link are available in the Community section of CEC’s website.

“It’s hard to believe, but the end of another school year will be upon us before they know it,” CEC President and CEO Steven Harmon said. “For high school seniors, that means some big decisions and big changes are coming. Community Electric is privileged to be able to assist some of the region’s young adults with their postsecondary education plans. Harmon encourages member-owners with graduating seniors to explore this opportunity to help lighten the financial load on this fall’s education circumstances.”

A year ago, scholarships were awarded to three students in CEC’s service territory — two from Windsor High School and one from Southampton High School.

Since 2001, the Education Scholarship Foundation has provided more than 900 scholarships totaling more than $900,000 to aspiring college students as well as to the next generation of electric line workers. The Foundation is funded through tax-deductible donations and bequests from individuals, proceeds from fundraising events, and CoBank’s Sharing Success Program. For information on donating to the Foundation, please visit www.vmdaec.com/scholarship.

Community Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Windsor, is a not-for-profit member-owned energy provider that serves nearly 12,000 homes, farms, and businesses in the counties of Isle of Wight, Southampton, Surry, and Sussex, and the City of Suffolk.
