Historic Napa Valley Winery That Shook The Wine World Offers New Exclusive Tour & Tasting

The Napa Valley continues to reimagine itself 170 years after vines were first planted in its hallowed ground. Many historic estates have contributed to the prowess and reputation in wine circles throughout the USA and around the world, possibly none more than Chateau Montelena. The property was established in 1882 and originally named A.L. Tubbs Winery for its founder, Alfred Tubbs. When the Barrett family took over the property, headed by James (Jim) Barrett, they couldn't have possibly imagined that their decisions 12 months later would alter the course of wine history in the valley forever. Their 1973 Napa Valley & Alexander Valley Chardonnay, made by legendary winemaker Mike Grgich, was entered into the Judgement of Paris wine competition—pitting the best French wines against counterparts from California—scored the highest of any wine in the competition. This even inspired the 2008 film Bottle Shock .

Today, Chateau Montelena is announcing a unique and exclusive experience curated for guests of The Francis House , offering unparalleled access to one of Napa Valley’s most storied estates. Typically not available to the public, guests will have the exclusive opportunity to visit the Montelena cellar, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the art of winemaking. Additionally, guests will have the chance to meet and chat with Winemaker Matt Crafton, an insider's perk not offered on any other Montelena tour.

This VIP package begins with a driving tour of the breathtaking estate, followed by a curated wine tasting and charcuterie board on the serene, private island of Jade Lake. The experience also includes a copy of “Judgment of Paris,” signed by CEO Bo Barrett, commemorating the winery's pivotal role in the historic 1976 wine competition.

Guests of the Francis House can access this experience for $498 per guest, and can book with the concierge at the hotel.

The Francis House is a boutique bed & breakfast and historic landmark offering luxurious accommodations and exceptional service only two and a half miles (about a five minute drive) from Chateau Montelena in Calistoga. The seven room boutique hotel was imagined, developed, and designed by husband & wife team Richard & Dina Dwyer. Bringing the property back from a dilapidated state after many decades of being abandoned, the Dwyers took a personal interest in owning and operating a French-inspired boutique bed & breakfast. Upon check-in a glass of wine is offered, unique breakfasts are prepared each morning at 9am, and you'll love the intimate feel of the property adorned with French fountains and a swimming/lounging pool.
