Most of the time, roadside hotels aren't anything to write home about. They're decent places to crash for the night if you're on a long road trip, or a cheap place to stay if you're visiting the area for a few days, but they're pretty basic and generic. Fine for what they are, but not something people would go out of their way to visit.
But looks can be deceiving, and even the most unassuming of chain hotels can surprise you. Case in point: this modest roadside hotel in Winona, Minnesota. From the outside, it looks completely generic, but like a kid's cereal box, there's a surprise inside...
You could easily stay at the Riverport Inn & Suites and never even know that there was something special about this hotel. As Margaret Beinert of @aprettycoolhoteltour explains, all of the location's rooms are standard hotel fare... all of them, that is, except for two very special exceptions.
The Riverport Inn and Suites ' two specialty rooms are notable for their unique theme. Instead of the generic roadside hotel decor, they're decorated with a 1950s flair, and each one has a special surprise: a custom bed made out of a 1950's Chevy convertible. One room has a sleek white and red convertible from 1959, and the other has a big, bright orange Chevy from 1957.
The Beinerts stayed in the room with the white '59 convertible bed, and... I mean, what can I say? It's the all-grown-up version of a classic kid's racecar bed . Between the fully retrofitted convertible bed and the en-suite cherry-red jacuzzi behind illuminated glass-block walls, this hotel room had the perfect amount of retro kitsch and campy style. To paraphrase Margaret, it's like someone turned Kesha's "Joyride" into a hotel suite!
The biggest caveat she had was that the bed is easier on the eyes than it is on the back. The mattress had to fit inside the car's body, and Margaret estimated it was somewhere between a twin and a double in size - a pretty snug fit for two people. Basically, it might not be the ideal room to crash down in after a long day of road tripping (besides, how ironic would it be to get out of your car only to fall asleep in another one?). That said, she did admit it was a "fun" sleep, and worth it just for the unique experience.
These vintage car suites in an otherwise standard chain hotel are the most random hidden gems, and I love them. If you ever happen to be passing through Winona, Minnesota, and want to switch up your hotel game, check into the Riverport Inn & Suites and see if their Chevy rooms are available!
