Sharon Playhouse to present “The Prom”
SHARON—Sharon Playhouse will unveil its second production of the season, The Prom, July 26. The play, a hit on Broadway, stars two-time Tony Award-nominee Kate Baldwin (“Hello, Dolly!,” “Finian’s Rainbow”) as Dee Dee Allen, one of four eccentric Broadway stars in desperate need of a career reboot.
Tim Limbos hired as new fire marshal
KENT—The Fire Marshal Hiring Subcommittee interviewed Tim Limbos Tuesday, June 18 for the position of fire marshal that was recently vacated by Stan MacMillan. After a short executive session and a discussion with Limbos about the job, the committee, consisting of First Selectman Marty Lindenmayer, Selectman Lynn Mellis Worthington, and Building Inspector Joseph Manley, voted to recommend him for employment to the selectmen. He will be paid $40 an hour for the part-time position.
New Milford Lions Carnival July 25-27
NEW MILFORD—The New Milford Lions Club will hold a carnival July 25 to 27 from 5 to 10 p.m. at 2 Pickett District Road. The event is co-sponsored by the Town of New Milford and will include games, rides, mid-way food and more. Admission is free.
Blacksmithing workshop at Sloane Museum July 28
KENT—The Eric Sloane Museum, 31 Kent Cornwall Rd., will host a blacksmithing basics workshop Sunday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program will explore blacksmithing techniques and methods through a hands-on workshop. taught by blacksmithing expert Ian McCarthy. Students will learn the basics of hand forging and design layout all while using traditional tools and methods to create a one-of-a-kind finished products. Pre-registration is required.
Cupcake party is sweet end to reading program
KENT—The Summer Reading program will come to an end for Teens and Tweens Monday, July 29, at 6 p.m., when Kent Memorial Library holds a Cupcake Decorating party. The event will be held in the Junior Room and the library will provide the cupcakes and decorations. Attendance at this event counts for one point towards the summer program’s eight-point goal. It is for children entering grades 5 and up only.

PZC quickly okays two applications
KENT—The Planning and Zoning Commission last week granted an application from Abigail Spath of 255 Kent Rd. for a greenhouse accessory structure. Spath was seeking a special permit to put the little building within the 100-foot setback from the south side of her property. PZC Chairman Wesley Wyrick told her that with the building already designed to be set back 72 feet from the road, she could move it another 28 feet and avoid having to have a special permit.
Vintage fashion finds offered by Kent Democrats
KENT—Vintage fashion items are being sought in advance of Kent’s Summer Sidewalk Days in August. The Kent Democratic Town Committee is holding a vintage fashion sale and is looking for gently used clothing and accessories that it will sell during the four-day event, Aug. 1 to 4. Proceeds will be used to support Democratic candidates on a regional, state and federal level.
Dragon Boat Festival to mark 10th year on Connecticut River in Springfield
There will be dragons in the Connecticut River on Saturday, July 21, but there is nothing to worry about and no danger to humans. The dragons are simply “dragon boats,” which will be racing as part of the 10th annual Dragon Boat Festival, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at North Riverfront Park on 121 West St. in Springfield.
Motoriot faces cease and desist order if not compliant
KENT—Land Use Administrator Tai Kern has sent registered letters of violation to the owners of Motoriot, a bespoke car dealership at 21 Bridge St., saying that a cease and desist order will be issued Aug. 9 if they do not provide information needed by the Planning and Zoning Commission.
Cornwall Days planned for Aug. 9-11
CORNWALL—Cornwall Days will be held Aug. 9-11 this year with live music, the Rose Algrant Art Show, family events and a Taste of Cornwall. The Algrant show opens Friday afternoon, 2-6 p.m., at Cornwall Consolidated School, and continues Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. until noon.
Prayer shawl volunteers are sought
KENT—The St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, of which Sacred Heart Church is a part, is seeking knitters and crocheters to join in its Parish Prayer Shawl Ministry. Prayer shawls are distributed to parishioners in need of some loving warmth due to illness or loss of a loved one. Blankets are also created for children who are baptized.
