WINSTON-SALEM — TechCareers, a workforce development program, announced that applications are now open for its spring 2024 cohort. Designed to bridge the gap between the current workforce’s skills and the demands of the rapidly growing tech industry in Winston-Salem, the program offers an opportunity for individuals looking to kickstart their careers in technology.

Those accepted to the TechCareers program receive training for the CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ Certification, opening doors to a variety of entry-level positions in Information Technology (IT) such as help desk, technical support, networking and security. With a rich history rooted in manufacturing, Winston-Salem is pivoting towards an innovation economy, creating an urgent need for tech-savvy professionals.

“Between tobacco and textiles, Winston-Salem has been a manufacturing economy for a long time. Those used to be sure-fire jobs for people in the community, but now there’s a misalignment of the skill sets of many people in our community with the jobs that are emerging with the new innovation economy,” said Michael Suggs, CEO of Goler CDC.

TechCareers is designed to cater to individuals with a strong desire to pursue a career in IT, regardless of prior experience in the field. By offering comprehensive training and support, the program aims to empower participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the tech industry.

“At TechCareers, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to pursue a fulfilling career in technology,” Program Coordinator Tasia Wilson said. “Our program is tailored to meet the needs of traditionally underserved populations, providing individualized support and guidance every step of the way.”

Key highlights of the TechCareers program include:

    • Training for the CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ Certification: Participants will receive comprehensive training to prepare for the CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ Certification, a recognized credential in the IT industry.
    • Career Coaching: TechCareers provides participants with essential career development skills, including resume building, interview preparation, appropriate dress, and workplace etiquette. With personalized coaching, participants are equipped to confidently meet with potential employers and ace interviews.
    • Industry Insights: TechCareers partners with local employers to stay informed about the industry landscape and provide participants with valuable job-seeking information. Whenever possible, participants are matched with job openings from employer partners.

Wilson added, “At TechCareers, we are committed to equipping our participants with the skills and support they need to succeed in the ever-evolving tech industry. We encourage individuals who are passionate about technology and eager to pursue a rewarding career in IT to apply to our Spring 2024 cohort.”
