Twin City Kiwanis Club donates $35,550 to serve local youth

Twin City Kiwanis Club is donating a total of 35,550 to 18 local organizations that align with the Kiwanis mission of making local youth stronger. The club’s board of directors approved the grants during its July meeting.

“We are pleased and honored to provide 18 grants to local organizations which, directly or indirectly, make Winston-Salem a better place for children,” Club President George Munford said. “The money was raised through this year’s Pancake Jamboree in February. We are thankful for everyone who attended and made these grants possible, and especially to Garner Foods, which sponsored this year’s jamboree.”

Ben Wilson Jr., who is the club’s president-elect, was in charge of this year’s jamboree.

Club member John Wells, the chair of the Youth Cervicese Committee, oversaw the grants process. The organizations selected to receive grants this year are:

• A Bed and a Book, $1,750

• Old Hickory Council Scouting America, $2,000

• Buddy Bears, $500

• Crosby Scholars, $2,500

• Crossnore Communities for Children, $2,500

• The Dwelling, $1,500

• Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, $4,000

• Forsyth Educator Warehouse, $1,250

• Forsyth Jail & Prison Ministry, $1,500

• Heart Math Tutoring, $1,000

• Love Literacy, $2,000

• Parenting Path, $1,500

• Postpartum Resource Center of the Triad, $1,000communities for children”

• Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, $3,000

• Smart Start of Forsyth County, $1,800

• Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department (sleeping bags), $750

• Winston-Salem Street School, $2,500

• Children of Vietnam, $4,500

Since 2006, the Twin City Kiwanis Club has raised and donated a total of $580,310 to local organizations.

The Twin City Kiwanis Club, established in 1956, unites adults of all ages, backgrounds, occupations and interests who want to make our community a better place for children. In addition to the annual Pancake Jamboree, other annual club activities include participating in the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Project and Kiwanis-sponsored programs such as high school key clubs; the Kiwanis Builders Club for youth 12-14; and the Surry County Aktion Club and the Enrichment Center Aktion Club, which are service clubs for young adults with disabilities.

The club meets Wednesdays at 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem. Club members use the entrance on 4 ½ Street.
