POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Polk County deputies shot and killed a suspect who hit his grandmother with a car and later rammed into a deputy’s vehicle, Sheriff Grady Judd said early Saturday.

Judd said a man, who has not been identified, went to his grandmother’s house in the Oakwood Estates neighborhood in Winter Haven around 9:30 p.m. Friday. After “some kind of disturbance,” Judd said the man hit his grandmother with a car, knocking her to the ground.

The woman was taken to a hospital. Her condition is not known.

Judd said the man fled the scene and later rammed a Polk County deputy’s vehicle. He said the deputy was responding to the scene.

“As soon as he rammed our deputy’s vehicle extremely hard, he jumped out — there was a confrontation — and the deputy shot the suspect, who is deceased at the scene,” Judd said.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy who was involved was taken to a hospital and is being treated for his injuries.

Judd said more information would be released at a later time.
