POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has identified the 19-year-old suspect in a deputy-involved shooting on Friday.

Sheriff Grady Judd said Henry Maynard was at his grandmother’s home in the Oakwood Estates neighborhood in Winter Haven around 9:30 p.m. Friday. He was asleep when she had placed an Amond Joy candy bar on his desk. When he woke up, the chocolate bar had melted, sending him “into a rage.”

Maynard ran to his parent’s house, picked up a bag, and drove back to his grandmother’s home in an unregistered car, and without a license.

He then called 911, telling the operator he was about to commit a crime and needed to be able to escape, Sheriff Judd said.

When Deputy Sheriff Christian Quattlebaum, 26, responded to the scene, Maynard drove past his parents, who had arrived at the grandmother’s home, and accelerated the vehicle, t-boning the deputy.

During this rage, he also ran over and dragged his grandmother with the car, who was trying to stop him from leaving. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

A neighbor told the sheriff’s office, that he then jumped out of the vehicle, in a rage “like a madman” and went to the driver’s side of the deputy’s vehicle, yanking on the door until it opened. That’s when he began climbing into the car.

Deputy Quattlebaum, who was trying to get out of the car through the passenger side, eventually shoots Maynard, who was attacking the deputy.

“As soon as he rammed our deputy’s vehicle extremely hard, he jumped out — there was a confrontation — and the deputy shot the suspect, who is deceased at the scene,” Judd said.

The sheriff’s office revealed Maynard had a previous arrest for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

Sheriff Judd said Maynard’s mother has worked as a detention deputy with the sheriff’s office for 10 years, and the father works as a nurse in their jail system. “Wonderful, wonderful people.”

The deputy was treated at a nearby hospital and is expected to be OK.
