WINTERVILLE — Registration for this year’s Explore Summer Camps at Pitt Community College is underway.

Designed for youngsters ages 6 to 18 years old, the camps cover a wide range of interests, including music, science, computers, art and health care. Costs, start dates and capacities vary, and registration is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Information is available at pittcc.edu/community/continuing-education/explore-summer-camps/.

“Our lineup of STEM camps is always popular, and we’ve added a number of new options this year, including Bruiser’s Automotive Institute and Camp Newspaper,” PCC Explore Camp Coordinator Lisa Webb said. “We’ve also added a couple of academic, but definitely still fun, camps in Mathletics Marathon and Typing Triumphs, based on parent feedback.”

For youngsters who enjoy the outdoors, Webb says there are camps on BMX riding, kayaking and SUP Yoga — a combination of yoga and stand-up paddleboarding. Children who love the arts, she said, can sign up for camps on drawing, ceramics, digital music creation, drama and literature, while kids who enjoy working with computers have many options, including programming, 3D game design and coding.

“Not only are our Explore camps educational, they give children opportunities to meet and interact with other kids from the community who share their interests,” Webb said. “A lot of the camps are career-related, too, so they teach youngsters about jobs and the skills and training needed to perform them.”

Webb says the camps also allow kids to maintain their regular school routine during the summer while enjoying dynamic classroom experiences.

This summer’s camp lineup also includes STEAM: KinderCamps for youngsters between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. They will take place on Pitt’s main campus in the Education and Child Development Program’s new model preschool classroom.

Each KinderCamp features science, technology, engineering, arts and math instruction. They also emphasize relationships, social and emotional learning, and social competence.

More information on KinderCamps is available by contacting Melissa Rees, chair of PCC’s Education and Child Development Department, at mdrees975@my.pittcc.edu.

Explore camps will take place at various locations and will be led by knowledgeable instructors, including Pitt County Schools teachers, PCC faculty and respected professionals from the community.

The first round of Explore Camps begins June 10 with “Camp Scrubs,” which will give participants a chance to learn about health care careers and earn Basic Life Support CPR certification. Most camps will take place in June and July, though there are several in August.

Camp fees range from $50 to $190 and include a T-shirt. They are nonrefundable, unless a camp is cancelled by the college.

Parents must contact Webb at 493-7317 or lawebb292@my.pittcc.edu to submit completed camp registration forms and payment. They may also reach out to PCC’s Melany Ball at 493-7854 or mdball522@my.pittcc.edu.

    Community yard sale

PCC’s Beta Nu Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will hold its annual spring yard sale on campus April 20.

Rain or shine, the fundraiser will take place in the paved parking lot in front of the William E. Fulford Building, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Setup begins at 6 a.m., and spaces must be cleaned up by noon.

The community is invited to participate in the sale by reserving parking spaces. Each parking spot costs $12, payable by cash or check, if paid by April 10 at 5 p.m. After that, spaces are $15 each and may be purchased “at the door” the morning of the event. Those who pay in advance are asked to bring their receipt to the sale.

Items prohibited on the PCC campus, including weapons, drugs, tobacco and alcohol, may not be sold during the event. Also, food and beverage sales are not allowed, except by PTK members. Sellers must provide their own tables and are permitted to park their vehicles in a separate parking space at no additional charge.

For more yard sale details, contact PCC instructor Joy Moses-Hall, who serves as PTK adviser, at jemoses-hall473@my.pittcc.edu or 493-7558.
