Eye Clinic of Wisconsin launches clinical research program

The Eye Clinic of Wisconsin announced this week it is now a site for clinical research studies, enabling patients to enroll in groundbreaking clinical trials.

This development marks a significant milestone in the clinic’s commitment to advancing ocular health and providing patients with access to the latest and most innovative treatments.

The clinic was officially approved to enroll participants for a study sponsored by Ocular Therapeutix on June 24.

This study aims to evaluate a new treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration and compare its efficacy and safety to currently available treatments. The global study plans to enroll 300 participants, with at least 10 participants from the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin.

Clinical trials play an essential role in the development of new treatments, potentially offering more effective or safer alternatives to existing therapies. As the only ophthalmology clinical trial site in our region, the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin is uniquely positioned to lead the way in ocular medical research.

“This is quite an exciting time here at the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin,” said Deepak Sambhara, MD, medical director of research at the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin, in a news release. “There is a misconception that you need to be in a big city or large health system to have access to these kinds of services. However, we are the only private group in the entire state of Wisconsin participating in clinical retina research and it’s taking place right here in central Wisconsin. We now have access to groundbreaking treatments for our patients, potentially years before they are commercially available.”

In addition to the Ocular Therapeutix study, the clinic anticipates approval to commence two more clinical trials in the coming weeks. One of these trials will focus on the monitoring of patients with wet AMD, while the other will investigate a new treatment for diabetic retinopathy.
