MILWAUKEE — Calling former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson’s speech Tuesday to Wisconsin Republican National Convention delegates a stemwinder could be considered an understatement.

Thompson, the longest serving governor in Wisconsin history, had the delegates on their feet chanting “fight, fight” as a rally cry to support the presidential candidacy of former president Donald Trump.

The photo of Trump bleeding from a gunshot wound Saturday shouting “fight” will be a victory cry for Trump’s campaign, Thompson said.

“This is my twelfth national convention,” Thompson said. “In the 48 years I’ve been doing this, we are at what I believe is the most significant convention ever.”

Wisconsin is in a critical position to determine the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, Thompson said.

“We are the leading state to change the direction of this country,” he said. “And, we will change that direction for the better.”

The policy positions of the Democratic Party as the presidential election draws near is an indication of Republican strength, Thompson said.

“The progressive left will change America for the worse, but they try to hide their intentions,” Thompson said. “Have you noticed that the closer we come to the election the more and more they become Republicans?”

Border policy is an example of the changing Democratic positions, Thompson said.

“After years of open borders, Democrats are now talking about securing the border,” he said. “But we know what they will do if they win, and we can’t have that.

“Two years ago, they were calling for defunding the police,” Thompson said. “We don’t hear that now, but we know it will come back.

“If you want the real thing, vote for a Republican,” he said as delegates stood and cheered.

Wisconsin will show the nation how Republicans will win, Thompson said.

“We will win Wisconsin for president Trump,” Thompson said. “We will lead the way in winning Congress and we will lead the way in making change.

“We will lead the fight for change.”
